APSU students curate exhibit of Cindy Marsh work

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – During Cynthia Marsh’s long and distinguished art career, she has designed and developed album covers for the Supremes and Elvis, traveled to Africa to study different techniques in papermaking and helped hundreds of Tennesseans express themselves with the help of an old letterpress.

On October 4th, a new exhibition of the Austin Peay State University professor of art’s work will open in the APSU Morgan University Center Gallery.

The show, “Cynthia Marsh: Artist, Teacher, Community Advocate,” will begin with a reception at 4:00pm that afternoon and run through October 28th. The show is curated by APSU students Barbra Isham, Lisa Weber, Katelan Shartzer and Alex Poppendorf.

The exhibit will present Marsh’s historical and contemporary works. A variety of mediums will be displayed characterizing her artistry as well as her collaborative communications through the University’s Goldsmith Press and Rare Type Collection.

“I consider myself a journalist – a note taker,” Marsh said. “I record the visual noise of my surroundings. By juxtaposing images and text (that often seem unrelated), I can open a discussion about contemporary values.”

During Marsh’s career, she has taught extensively at institutions such as the Woman’s Building in Los Angeles, California State University of Northridge and the American Institute of Graphic Design. She has been with APSU for 15 years, eight of which were spent as chairman of the Art Department.

In 2009, she received the Clarksville Chamber of Commerce – APSU Faculty Community Service Award. The same year, her article, “Surrender, 20 Truths about Clifton Meador” was included in the Journal of Artists’ Books.
