Austin Peay Downtown Gallery to present exhibition of new works by Paul Collins

Austin Peay Downtown Art GalleryClarksville, TN – This month, the Austin Peay Downtown Gallery will present “Grow Where You’re Planted,” an exhibition of new works by APSU assistant professor of art Paul Collins.

The exhibit, which opens with a reception from 5:00pm-8:00pm on October 4th, will feature drawings and paintings inspired by the incredible rate of vegetative growth in the landscape of Middle Tennessee.

“I have been inspired by these crazy vines since the minute I set foot in Tennessee,” Collins said. “I began my career making landscape paintings 25 years ago, and it has been a thrill to get back to it, working through these exciting forms.”

The works in this exhibit use vibrant colors and gestures to mimic the robust and seemingly unstoppable march of vines and undergrowth across the area’s terrain.

Collins earned his Master of Fine Arts from Yale, and he has been a resident at Skowhegan, Anderson Ranch Arts Center and the Vermont Studio Center. He currently serves as the gallery director at APSU, and “Grow Where You’re Planted” will mark his first solo show in Clarksville. The exhibit runs through October 27th.

In 2009, the APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts leased a building in downtown Clarksville to provide gallery space for APSU alumni and faculty. The gallery, located at 116 Strawberry Alley in downtown Clarksville, is open from 4:00pm-7:00pm on Friday and 10:00am-5:00pm on Saturday.
