Austin Peay Governors Golf falls to fourth at WKU Kenny Perry Invitational

Bowling Green, KY – Austin Peay State University men’s golf team could not finish what it started Monday and, as a result, finds itself in an uphill battle heading to the final round of WKU Kenny Perry Invitational, being played at the Club at Olde Stone.

The Govs, who entered the day 15 strokes off the pace of Jacksonville State, cut it all the way down to five strokes, but couldn’t maintain that momentum as they were eight over on the final three holes. As a result, the Govs shot a 310 and find themselves in fourth place heading into the tourney’s final round, Tuesday, on the par 72, 7372-yard layout.

JSU (304-209=614) will take a nine-shot lead into the final round over Louisville (315-308=623) while Akron (321-306=627) has slipped past the Govs into third place.

“We had the low round of the tournament going but we have to learn to finish,” APSU coach Kirk Kayden said. “As I told our guys that is why JSU are champs, they finish rounds and we are not right now.

“We really had something going today-we started off so well. If you can get to five, six or seven shots entering the final day, you still have good chance in team golf heading into the final round. Anything can happen.  That’s what is so disappointing.”

Junior Anthony Bradley, who played at Olde Stone in last spring’s NCAA Regional, had the Govs’ best tourney round with a 3-over 75 for 154, good enough for a fifth-place tie. Redshirt freshman Korey Smith fired a 76 for a 158 total. Dustin Korte, who struggled off the tee all day long, scrambled to a 6-over 78, giving him a 160 total.

Junior Marco Iten was one of those Govs who saw a passable round disintegrate late. He bogeyed No. 17 before No. 18 ended in a triple. As a result, he finished with an 81, the same score that freshman Austin Kramer posted.

“We really played the tough (early) holes well today,” Kayden said. “We were making shots that we needed to make.

“Anthony really had a solid round, although he felt like he a shot away (bogey) on 17. A 76 from Korey on a course like this is excellent.  It was strange to see Dustin struggling like he did off the tee-it was just one of those days, but he still gave us a 78.

“The course still played really tough today. The average score was right at 80 (79.8).”

Kayden is hopeful his Govs can bounce back with their tourney’s best round on Tuesday.

“We are looking for consistency,” he said. “We would like us to play a solid, quality golf and finish off the round and see what happens. Anything is possible on this course.”
