The Govs shot 290-285 in two rounds, Monday, on the Links at Novadell and overcame a one-stroke deficit after the first 18 holes to fire a three-under second-round aggregate. Austin Peay leads Lipscomb, the first-round leader, by three shots and Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State by four shots. OVC foes Belmont (4-over par), UT Martin and SIU Edwardsville (5-over) are also in the hunt.

“The guys weren’t totally satisfied today,” said head coach Kirk Kayden. “We’ve shot much better at this course before. They did a good job of hanging in there and working hard for us today.”

Anthony BradleyJunior Anthony Bradley is the top Gov on the leaderboard. He shot a first-round 72 and followed it up with a 69 over the second 18 holes to move into a tie for fourth with Belmont’s Ted Moon at three-under par.

Junior Marco Iten, who won this tournament in 2011, positioned himself to make a run at being the first-ever repeat champion. His first round 69 left him one shot off the lead, and he is in a six-way tie for sixth after a second-round 73 left him at two-under par.

Marco ItenThe par-3 fifth hole, a 248-yard monster into a strong wind, wreaked havoc on the field for much of the first two rounds. Players averaged nearly a stroke over par over the first 36 holes, allowing Iten (who made par on both attempts Monday) to gain ground on the field.

A pair of freshmen shot matching two-over par 146 on the opening 36 holes. Korey Smith (74-72) and Austin Kramer (75-71) turned in top-20 performances on the day. Kramer’s second-round 71 was the second-lowest score by a Gov in the second round.

“Those two came through for us today,” Kayden said. “We got some good scores from them today, and picked up a couple of strokes. That was good team golf.

“Everybody contributed today. We’ve got to have that tomorrow, because there are a bunch of teams right on our heels. Five or six teams really have a chance.”

Senior Dustin Korte had the toughest day, battling to card a 149 (76-73) that left him in a tie for 36th.

Tucker WallaceAustin Peay’s second team was paced by sophomore Tucker Wallace, who fired a second-round 71 to finish one-over par (74-71-145) on the tournament.

Final-round action kicks off with a shotgun start, 9:00am, Tuesday, at Novadell.
