APSU Sports: Austin Peay Women’s Golf
Gulf Shores, AL – Freshman Jessica Cathey continued her outstanding fall play by shooting a 2-over 74, Tuesday, to finish fourth at the 2012 UAB Fall Beach Bash, played at the Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club.Cathey finished at 150 in the two-day tourney but her superb round, however, could not prevent the Lady Govs from slipping into fourth place with a second-round 320 for a 641. Southern Miss won the event with a 613, followed by Sam Houston State (627), host UAB (633), Houston Baptist (634) and Emory-Riddle (640). The Lady Govs did outdistance Belmont (646) and Tennessee Tech (650).
Cathey’s 74 tied for second low round of the day. It also was her fifth straight sub-80 round, capping off a brilliant first golf semester.
“Jessica has been working on her putting-it has gotten a lot better and I think that was in evidence today.”
Cathey was the only Lady Gov to break 80 in the two-day tournament, APSU’s final fall event. The conditions remained windy and saw senior Lauren Bond and Tabitha Beard mirror their performances on both days, shooting 81s on Monday and 80s on Tuesday. Sophomore Meghan Mueller was APSU’s other count on Tuesday with an 86. Junior Tala Mumford, who had been one of APSU’s most consistent performers all fall, struggled in Gulf Shores following up Monday’s 81 with an 87 Tuesday.
Meanwhile, senior Holly Batey shot a two-day 178.
“It was still really windy today,” Robson said. “We putted better today, but again we just had way too many big numbers.”
