Austin Peay Lady Govs Golf signs two in early period

APSU Sports: Austin Peay Women’s Golf

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – It won’t be hard for Austin Peay State University golf coach Sara Robson to remember the first names of her most recent signees.

They are both named Morgan.

The Lady Govs have announced the signing of Morgan Gardner, of Orlando, FL, and Morgan Kauffman, of Chattanooga, TN, to letters of intent for the 2013-14 season.

Gardner has been a participant of the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour, recording four Top 10 finishes, and captured the Junior Golf Association (JGA) Championship of Broward County, a tourney that was played on three different courses in three days.

“I am excited to have Morgan join our program,” APSU coach Sara Robson said. “She is a hard worker who loves the game.  Her dedication and tournament experience will help our program continue to improve and achieve our goals.  She has experience playing in wind and rain which will come in handy during our spring season.”

Gardner played her prep golf at Coral Springs Christian Academy. Since not enough girls were available to participate as a girls golf team, Gardner not only played on the boys golf team but excelled, playing as the No. 2 golfer on the longer courses.

“Morgan had to compete on the boys team in high school since her school did not have a girls team,” Robson said. “This allowed her to get used to playing from longer yardage and therefore relaying on her short game.  This will help her coming into college where we play on average 6,000 yards and short game is key to scoring.“

Kauffman, meanwhile, moved from Paducah, KY, to Knoxville, TN,  for her most recent senior season.  She helped Farragut capture the District tournament championship with a sizzling 7-under 65 for medalist honors.  She also helped pace the Knoxville school to region championship and runner-up in the Class AAA state tournament, finishing 12th individually.

As a senior Kauffman’s scoring average was 39 holes and 75 for 18.

She has captured multiple titles and second-places finishes on the Southern Junior Golf Tour (SJGT), Tennessee Golf Association (TGA) and Pepsi Tournament tours.

“Morgan has shown great improvement over the last couple of years in her game,” Robson said. “She joined the Farragut High School team this fall after her family relocated to Tennessee and consistently shot in the low to mid 70’s.  She finished tied for 11th at the TSSAA AAA State Golf Championship.

“Her distance and scoring ability along with hard work and dedication will help her be successful as a Lady Gov.  Kauffman was highly recruited in the OVC and we are honored that she chose Austin Peay.

“We lose three seniors (Tabitha Beard, Lauren Bond, Holly Batey) this May, therefore are looking for both Gardner and Kauffman to come in and pick up where they left off.”

The Lady Govs plan to sign one more but are not expected to fill that slot during the fall.
