Austin Peay Governors Football’s Reco Williams named to OVC All-Newcomer Squad

Ohio Valley ConferenceBrentwood, TN – Austin Peay redshirt freshman tailback Reco Williams has been named to the Ohio Valley Conference All-Newcomer team, in a vote of OVC coaches and sports information directors.

Williams carried the ball 105 times for 501 yards – an average of 4.8 yards per carry – in nine games for the Governors in 2012. He also caught 17 passes – fourth-most by a Gov – for 147 yards. He also totaled three touchdowns on the season (two rushing, one receiving).

The 6-1, 250-pound bruiser ran roughshod over Southeast Missouri, October 27th, gaining 133 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown and catching two passes for 45 yards. His 178 all-purpose yards were a season high and the 133 on the ground were the best total posted by a Gov in 2012.

Williams is the first Gov to earn all-newcomer accolades since Ryan White in 2008 and the third Austin Peay running back to be named All-Newcomer since the OVC instituted the honor in 2005. The previous two Austin Peay winners – White and Terrence Holt – both went on to earn All-OVC honors later in their careers.

“Reco came in and learned the offense over the first couple of games,” said Austin Peay head coach Rick Christophel. “He had to step in and did a fine job. He’s got really good hands for a back; as he gets stronger and picks up some speed, he’s going to get even better.”
