APSU Sports: Austin Peay Women’s Basketball
Huntsville, AL – Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team will enter Ohio Valley Conference play with a pair of accomplishments in hand courtesy a 67-54 non-conference win against Alabama A&M, Saturday, at Elmore Gymnasium.
The win was the Lady Govs first away from the Dunn Center this season, ending a seven-game losing streak. It also gave Austin Peay back-to-back wins – coming eight days after a home win against Lipscomb – for the first time this season.“This was a good win for us,” said Lady Govs head coach Carrie Daniels. “Especially with the pressure and intensity Alabama A&M put on the court in the second half. It is a tough place to play and I’m really proud of us turning it on and finding a way to get this first road win.”
Austin Peay (5-7) had to survive a second-half cold stretch that saw it make only two shots in an eight-minute span. And while Alabama A&M (1-9) wasn’t much warmer, it was able to cut a 12-point APSU lead to five points, 51-46, with 6:05 left in the game.
But just as the Lady Bulldogs seemed to have secured the game’s momentum, Austin Peay got a pair of key baskets to wrest back control. Junior Nicole Olszewski struck first with a step-back three-pointer – her only triple of the contest – that stopped the run. Moments later, freshman Tiasha Grey sparked a fast break and passed to senior Leslie Martinez who made a layup that put the APSU lead back to 10 points.
Alabama A&M would close back to within six points, but Austin Peay closed the game with a 9-2 run to secure the win. Sophomore Kristen Stainback had a three-pointer and made all four of her free-throw attempts in that final 1:39.
Austin Peay also had to overcome another cold road start in the first half. The Lady Govs made only two of their first seven shots and trailed by four points, 10-6, less than five minutes into the contest.
The Lady Govs broke out of their funk by scoring the game’s next 12 points, including eight by senior Meghan Bussabarger, to gain an 18-10 lead with 12:34 left. The Lady Govs would nurse that lead into halftime, taking a 38-29 advantage into the break.
Bussabarger led Austin Peay with 15 points despite failing to score in the 2nd half courtesy foul trouble. Nicole Olszewski added 13 points – on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting from the floor – and had four assists. Stainback (12 points) and freshman Alexis Hardaway (11) also reached double-digit scoring territory.
“I have always said I would rather four or five people come out and contribute on any night instead of one or two players scoring 20 points,” said Daniels. “That is the kind of team we want to be and seeing that on the stat sheet tonight was good to see.”
Shundray Davis scored 13 points to lead an Alabama A&M squad that lost its ninth straight contest. NaDra Robertson added 10 points and nine rebounds.
Austin Peay will get a week-long break before opening OVC action with a 2:00pm, Saturday contest against Southeast Missouri in Cape Girardeau, MO.
