Clarksville, TN – The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department is mentoring area youth who want to pursue a career in law enforcement. Law Enforcement Exploring is Learning for Life’s career education program for young men and women 14 to 20 years old with an interest in a career in law enforcement.
This work-site based program, that is fully funded by donations, helps youth prepare for their future profession by experiencing fun-filled, hands-on activities. Learning for Life, which is a division of the Boy Scouts of America, focuses on the following five areas of emphasis: Career Opportunities, Leadership Experience, Character Education, Citizenship, and Life Skills.
Sheriff’s Deputy Stephanie Price, who is a Student Resource Officer at Rossview Middle School, is one of the coordinators of the program. Along with Deputy Angela Christian, also an SRO at Northeast Middle School, they teach the methods of being a professional law enforcement officer, and help young people in the Clarksville community become more familiar with law enforcement.“We want young people who are interested in a career in law enforcement to have an understanding, at an early age, what it’s all about. We meet twice per month on the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month, and show them what the Sheriff’s Department is all about. We have different speakers from all areas of our department, and we give them a hands on look at what we do,” said Price.
“These students must maintain a “C” average in school, stay out of trouble, and have a desire to do what we do,” said Christian.
The late Sheriff Norman Lewis formed Explorer Post #600 in order to prepare the selected youth of Montgomery County to become responsible and caring adults through their experiences with the post. The hope is that the youth will gain a better understanding of what law enforcement is all about so that they can determine if it is their career choice. Through community service, confidence building activities, and hands-on experience, these young people develop a solid foundation to begin a future in law enforcement.
This weekend’s fundraiser was to help with their trip to Gatlinburg, where they will compete with other explorer posts from all across the South. Deputy Price said, “last year, our group took 1st place in bomb response. They were given a scenario that included a bomb threat, and performed the best out of a group of over two thousand who were there.”
Montgomery County Law Enforcement Explorer Post #600 meets at 6:00pm every first and third Monday of each month at the Sheriff’s Office 5th floor training room. These times are subject to change.
