Austin Peay Downtown Art GalleryClarksville, TN – A new exhibit at the Austin Peay Downtown Gallery this month will highlight of the work of APSU alumnus Young Kim and APSU art instructor Becky Hall. The exhibit, “Collective II,” will open with a reception from 5:00pm to 8:00pm on February 7th, and it will run through March 2nd.

Kim, a native of South Korea, is an associate professor of art at Elon University in North Carolina. His work has been exhibited extensively at numerous galleries, including the Second Street Gallery in Charlottesville, VA, the Hun Gallery in New York City and Causey Contemporary in Brooklyn.

“This work is a collection of collections,” he said of the new exhibit. “Acquired through a second hand store, each bag contains objects, untouched, sealed within a pocket of air in a ubiquitous plastic bag by the previous owner. Like amber, the containers hold, yet reveal. They create physical and mental space encircling each object, in which to ponder its history and contemplate our own.”

Hall received her Bachelor of Science from the University of Tennessee in biology, with a minor in psychology. She later settled in Clarksville, raised a family and started a business. She then headed to the University of Kentucky, where, as a classmate of Kim, she earned her Master of Fine Arts. She is a temporary full-time instructor at APSU, and her work has been shown predominantly in the southeastern United States, including Kentucky, South Carolina and Tennessee.

“From all the discoveries and rediscoveries came objects that drew me,” she said of her work in “Collective II.” “The combining was steeped in memory or some seemingly obvious association, maybe a sense of story gathered together in momentary collections – a change to remember and speak quietly.”

The Austin Peay Downtown Gallery is located at 116 Strawberry Alley in downtown Clarksville. It is open from 4:00pm to 7:00pm on Fridays and from 10:00am to 4:00pm on Saturdays.
