“We had some bright spots today,” said head coach Doug Molnar. “Unfortunately, we’re in a bit of hole and we’ve got to pick up some spots tomorrow to remain competitive.”

Junior Xiamar Richards earned five points on Day One, finishing fourth in the 5000m run with a 17:44.18 run. She broke the school record in the event by more than eight seconds.

In the weight throw, senior Jasmine Foster’s fifth-place, 16.67m (54′ 8.25″) toss earned four points toward the Lady Govs total and was a personal-best for her in the event.

“Jasmine and Xiamar did an outstanding job,” Molnar said. “A split race is tough, but Xiamar stayed focused. Jasmine’s personal-best was fantastic; she stepped up against great competition and did a great job for us.”

OVC Indoor Track Athlete of the Year Chantelle Grey performed up to expectations in the 800m run, qualifying in the top spot for tomorrow’s final with a 2:14.43 mark, nearly three seconds faster than her nearest competition.

Freshman Breigh Jones, who entered Friday’s competition as the OVC leader in the 400m dash, slipped to eighth with a 57.86 mark, barely qualifying for tomorrow’s final in the event.

The distance medley team, spearheaded by Grey and Jones, placed sixth with a season-best 12:35.28 mark, earning three points. The DMR team had been third in the OVC entering the championships.

Senior Lauren Lyles accounted for the Lady Govs final point on the competition’s first day. She finished eighth with a 5.37m (17′ 7.50″) mark in the long jump.

Action continues on Day Two at the OVC Indoor Championships, Saturday, beginning at 9:30am.
