Clarksville Police Department Funeral Procession Policy to be discussed again in Public Safety Committe

City of ClarksvilleClarksville, TN – In response to questions received about the Clarksville Police Department’s updated policy on funeral processions, Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan and Clarksville Police Chief Al Ansley have requested that the Public Safety Committee place the topic on the meeting agenda for Wednesday, March 20th, 2013.

The meeting will take place at 4:00pm in the City Hall Conference Room, 4th Floor, 1 Public Square in downtown Clarksville.

The revised policy was discussed, with Chief Ansley providing details about the need for the policy change based on several safety issues, during last month’s Public Safety Committee meeting.

In the past few days, however, there has been an increase in the number of questions received by the CPD and the Mayor’s office about the change. Those questions will be addressed again at the March 20th, 2013 meeting.

“Based on the questions we’re getting and the comments I’ve heard, I believe there is confusion about the policy and the intent,” said Mayor McMillan. “For example, there are no limits being placed on the number of cars that can be included in a funeral procession. That’s not the intent of the policy at all. Chief Ansley and I agreed that the best way for people to hear what the policy says and the reasons for the revision is to have him discuss it fully again in a public setting.”

All members of the public are invited and encouraged to attend the Public Safety Committee meeting.

The policy which went into effect March 18th is

To ensure the safety of the public during funeral escorts and provide the immediate family of the deceased the utmost respect the Police Department will provide one patrol unit as an escort to the grave site in a procession that will include the hearse and six additional vehicles.

The last vehicle will be clearly marked as the end of the procession.
