Austin Peay State University Lady Govs Softball on the road against Jacksonville State Gamecocks, Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles this weekend

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s softball team will face two of the Ohio Valley Conference’s East Division best this weekend as it travels to Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech for a pair of OVC doubleheaders.

The Lady Govs will play the Gamecocks twice, 1:00pm, Saturday, before hopping back on the bus to travel to Cookeville to face the Golden Eagles, noon, Sunday.

APSU (9-10, 0-3 OVC) still is seeking its first conference wins this season, after dropping all three games to Eastern Illinois last weekend, but must attempt to do it on the road against the teams picked in the preseason poll to finish one-two in the OVC’s East Division.

Laurel BurroughsOffensively, Austin Peay is led by sophomore Laurel Burroughs, who enters the weekend hitting .421 that includes seven doubles, three triples, two home runs and 14 RBI.

Despite Burroughs’ impressive numbers, junior Kayla Davidson is the hottest Lady Govs’ current hottest hitter after  a week where she hit .611 and smacked three home runs.

Overall, Davidson is batting .404 on the season, including five doubles and three home runs, with 15 RBI.

Lauren de CastroJunior Lauren de Castro (.328, 3 HR, 11 RBI) and freshman Mel Pavel (.300, 1 HR, 5 RBI) are also hitting at a .300 clip or better on the season.

In the circle, de Castro tops the Lady Govs pitchers with a 5-4 win-loss mark and a 2.82 ERA. She has 36 strikeouts in 61.1 innings of work.

Senior Morgan Brewer has the other four Austin Peay wins, and is 4-5 on the season, with a 6.35 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 46.1 innings pitched.

Jacksonville State (16-11 3-0 OVC) has three players hitting better than .300, led by Sara Borders’ .366 batting average, including 11 doubles and four home runs.

Tiffany Harbin is the workhorse for the Gamecocks pitching staff, with a 9-4 record and a 2.51 ERA. She has impressive 126 strikeouts in 97.2 innings so far this season.

Sunday’s opponent, Tennessee Tech (11-11, 0-0 OVC) will face Murray State on Friday to open up its conference schedule, before facing the Lady Govs.
