APSU Sports: Austin Peay Softball
Martin, TN — Austin Peay State University’s softball team suffered yet another close Ohio Valley Conference loss, Saturday afternoon at Bettye Giles Field, as Tennessee Martin scored three late runs to come away with a 5-2 victory.
The Lady Govs (10-16, 1-7 OVC) trailed the Skyhawks 2-0 heading into the top of the fourth inning, but they would tie the game, scoring twice on three hits – including two doubles.Lauren de Castro would get things started for Austin Peay with a single through the right side of the UT Martin (22-9, 7-2 OVC) infield. It was her second hit of the game.
She would move to second on a wild pitch and an out later scored on a double to left-center by Mel Pavel to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.
Misti Maki would come in to run for Pavel and she would score on a two-out double to left by Abby Guest to tie the game, 2-2.
But UT Martin would answer the Lady Govs two runs with two of its own in the bottom of the inning, as they recorded four straight hits to open the inning.
Lauren Smith doubled to start the inning, followed by singles by Becca Williams, Jessie Britt and Deven Wilson.
Britt and Kayla Wade had two hits each for UT Martin.
Smith scored on Britt’s single and pinch runner Rachel Scrum scored on the back end of a double steal to make it 4-2.
UT Martin would tack on an insurance run in the fifth inning, aided by two two-out errors by Austin Peay to go up three runs, 5-2.
The Lady Govs never really threatened in its last two at bats, with a double by Pavel being the only batter to reach base.
Pavel and de Castro would lead the Lady Govs with two hits each.
Austin Peay had threatened to score first, to open the game by loading the bases – with two outs – with Laurel Burroughs reaching on an error, a de Castro single and a walk to Kayla Davidson.
But Skyhawks starter Kenzi Tate (13-1) got Pavel on strikes to end the inning.
The Skyhawks would add to their lead in the third, scoring a run on a double by Leah Taylor, after Wade had reached base after being hit by a pitch and move into scoring position by stealing second base.
Austin Peay is off until next weekend when they return home, to Cheryl Holt Field, and face OVC foes Morehead State, on April 6th (noon) and Eastern Kentucky April 7th (noon) in a pair of doubleheaders.
