APSU Sports: Austin Peay Men’s Golf
Jonesboro, AR– With juniors Anthony Bradley and Marco Iten leading the way, Austin Peay State University men’s golf team will take a 12-shot advantage into Tuesday’s final round of the ASU Red Wolves Intercollegiate, being at the Ridgepoint Country Club.
The Governors shot an opening-round tourney-low 2-under 282, Monday morning, to build a 12-shot lead and maintained that advantage in the afternoon. The Govs shot a 566 for the day while fellow Ohio Valley Conference foe Belmont is in second place at 578. Former OVC rival Samford is third at 581 while Southern Illinois is in fourth at 583. Those three schools along with the Governors will be grouped on the final day on the par-71, 6,565-yard layout.
Bradley, the defending OVC medalist, enjoyed his spring’s best day, shooting a 2-under 69 in the morning only to go one better in the afternoon. His two-round 5-under 137 has him atop the leader board, three shots ahead of teammate Marco Iten (68-72=140) and Oral Roberts Scott Newell.
“Anthony has been getting a little better each week,” APSU coach Kirk Kayden said. “He hit a lot of solid shots today and felt like it even could have been better if his putting would have been solid.
“He is really swinging well right now. He really has got it together this week.”
But Kayden, however, was particularly pleased with his team’s balance. The Govs’ worst score in the opening round was a 74 while in Round 2 freshman Chris Baker, making his third start in the No. 5 spot, shot a 2-under 69.
”I have said this in the past but it is really nice to have five guys in the mix,” Kayden said. “You really don’t know who is going to count in the end. In the first round we threw out a 74 and Tucker and Dustin pretty much had the same score in the second. You like to have that fifth guy that can pick someone up with an under-par round like we had today.
“Today was just a good day of team golf.”
As a result of his second-round 69, Baker is tied for 11th at 143 while Dustin Korte (73-75) and Tucker Wallace (72-76) are at 6-over 148. Playing as an individual, redshirt freshman Cleve Guinn shot a 163 (84-79).
“It was a windy day,” Kayden said. “It is golf course if you can stay away from the high numbers you can score pretty well. We were able to do that today and now we have to do the same Tuesday if we are going to finish this off.”
