APSU Sports: Austin Peay Women’s Soccer
Clarksville, TN – A pair of Canadian imports are joining Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team for the 2013 season. Gina Fabbro, a mid-year transfer, and Courtney Sheppard have committed to the Lady Govs for next year.
Fabbro joined the Lady Govs at the beginning of spring semester, adding depth up front for an already-talented Lady Govs squad that returns 2012 Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year Tatiana Ariza and six-goal scorer Andy Quiceno. The Coquitlam, British Columbia native will be nearly 2,500 miles from home during her Lady Govs career. An accomplished goal-scorer, Fabbro won the Golden Boot Award (most goals scored) during the 2010 Super Y-League Girls U16 Tournament, en route to All-Tournament honors. She’s also spent time in the development program of the Vancouver Whitecaps of the W-League and played in the B.C. Youth Premier League with Coquitlam Metro-Ford SC.
“Gina came in mid-year and has done very well for us,” said head coach Kelley Guth, herself a native Canadian. “She’s made a smooth transition into the college game. She’s getting a good opportunity to get some experience and I’m excited to see what she’ll bring to the table in the fall.”
Sheppard also played for Coquitlam Metro-Ford SC as a midfielder. The Port Moody, B.C. native was the program’s Player of the Year in 2012, and parlayed that performance into Pac West Rookie of the Year and First-Team All-Star for Langara College.
She joins a packed midfield on the Lady Govs roster that includes three seniors (Natalia Ariza, Joceline Quiceno and Morgan Zigelsky) along with six other incoming student-athletes.
“Courtney had a great year in her first college season,” Guth said. “She’s a worker and a very technical player. She and Gina both played at a very high level on their youth squads. She’ll bring some experience and add depth to our midfield come fall.”
