Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam proclaims Gold Star Wives Day

April 5th, 2013 will be a day to honor wives of fallen service members

Tennessee Department of Veterans AffairsNashville, TN – Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam and Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Many-Bears Grinder today announced April 5th, 2013 as Gold Star Wives Day to honor the spouses of service members who have died in the line of duty or as a result of service-connected disabilities.

Gold Star Wives of America, Inc., is a Congressional chartered, non-profit organization created by the war widows of World War II in the State of New York on December 18th, 1945.

Eleanor Roosevelt was a member of one of the 15 signers of the original Gold Star Wives of America, Inc. papers. Gold Star Wives was created to offer comfort, friendship, guidance and advocacy to members for military survivor benefits.

This proclamation also recognizes the 68th anniversary of the first meeting of Gold Star Wives which was held in 1945.

“It is a privilege to recognize the sacrifice of Gold Star Wives and their loved ones,” Grinder said.  “Their service to our country and Tennessee communities not only enrich our lives, but their continued commitment to support veterans and other grieving survivors has created an enduring legacy for fallen service members.”

Gold Star Wives have sacrificed a great deal to their country already, but they are committed to continue to serve service members and veterans to strengthen our communities.” Grinder said. “Their support also encourages other wives and families facing the loss of a loved one and they should be commended for their compassion and dedication.”

Gold Star Wives of America members have established networks across the country to remain active in the military community.  There are two chapters of Gold Star Wives in Tennessee.
