APSU Sports: Austin Peay Women’s Golf
Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s golf team hopes to build on some late-season momentum as it participates in a trio of dual matches this weekend.
The Lady Govs are coming off their season-low round of 309 during the final day of the EKU Colonel Classic. The tourney was APSU’s first this spring that wasn’t affected by precipitation. As a result, the Lady Govs were able to complete uninterrupted all 54 holes and improved each day.
“We have had a tough spring and I attribute most of that to the weather and practice conditions,” APSU coach Sara Robson said. “It is nice to see the weather finally seems to have broken, allowing us to get in some great practice.
“The girls played better last week at EKU and we are looking to use that as confidence going into this weekend. It would be nice to get three last wins going into the OVC championship.”
All seven Lady Govs golfers will participate in the three weekend matches. Individual match scores could play a key role in determining the final lineup for the OVC championship, April 21st-23rd, at GreyStone Golf Club in Dickson, TN.
Representing the Lady Govs team on Saturday will be senior Tabitha Beard, juniors Rachel Deaton and Tala Mumford, sophomore Meghan Mueller and freshman Jessica Cathey. Seniors Lauren Bond and Holly Batey wll play as individuals. Sunday and Monday’s lineups have not been determined.
Mumford shot a career-low 70 in the final round at EKU, tying for eighth place overall at 228. Beard and Mueller tied for 19th while Deaton tied for 24th, shooting a spring-best 73.
“We are very familiar with two of the three courses,” Robson said. “However, we do not have anyone who has played The Hermitage. To play well we need to rely on our familiarity of Novadell and Clarksville Country Club, be aggressive and relax. We will need to play smart golf at The Hermitage, not having seen the course we will need to pick our targets carefully, and have a good day on their very fast greens.”
