American Red Cross assisting Those affected by Flash Flooding

Two Rivers Chapter Volunteers Working to Meet Emergency Needs

American Red CrossClarksville, TN – Severe spring storms and flash floods poured torrential rain over much of Tennessee on Saturday morning and again in the evening.

Eight homes were destroyed from the flood with 26 others sustaining major damage, across 4 counties including Henry, Houston, Montgomery and Stewart.  The Red Cross responded immediately to provide food, shelter and emotional support to help families who had been affected by the storms.

“Now more than ever, our community is depending on the Two Rivers Chapter of the American Red Cross to be able to respond immediately to deliver help and hope to those who need us most,” said Emergency Services Director, Cecil Stout. “Even as the storms were barely subsiding, the Red Cross was on the scene opening emergency shelters in Erin, Dover and Clarksville to help those who were forced out of their homes.”

Currently, 41 volunteers have been working for the past 3 days to ensure that the Red Cross is providing meals, snacks, water and clean-up kits that include buckets, mops, brooms, gloves, garbage bags, bleach, masks and scrub brushes.

Three shelters were opened in response to flash flooding in Clarksville, Dover and Erin and 54 residents stayed in the shelters overnight and then quickly transitioned out to stay with friends or family members. To date the Red Cross has served 422 meals, 720 snacks, 2,400 bottles of water and has distributed 100 clean-up kits to help with recovery efforts.

Many roads are still washed out and inaccessible, but Red Cross volunteers have been conducting damage assessment reports in Henry, Houston, Montgomery and Stewart Counties. There are an estimated 340 homes that were affected between 4 counties.

Currently, the Red Cross is still providing outreach in flood affected communities to help meet emergency needs and we will continue working for the next several days. The organization is also partnering with the Church of Christ Disaster Relief, Southern Baptists and Signature Healthcare based in Stewart and Houston Counties to help provide meals.

Two bulk distribution sites have been set up in Stewart County in the Dover and Carlisle communities to help local residents obtain clean-up kits, snacks and water. Volunteers have also been working today to report damage assessment for 150 homes that were previously inaccessible.
