By releasing Hawkins, the Titans freed up $1.9 million that he would have made during the 2013-14 NFL season. This will help Tennessee with signing their rookies and possibly adding depth with free agents.

This move was made easier since in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, the Tennesee Titans move up to the 2nd pick (34th overall) to grab Tennessee Volunteers wide receiver Justin Hunter.

Now the Titans have Hunter, Kenny Britt, Kendall Wright, Nate Washington, and Damian Williams at the top of their wide receiver depth chart. They also have Kevin Walter, Marc Mariani and Michael Preston that will be competing during training camp for a spot.

Safety Tuimaunei joined the Titans in December and was on their practice squad. Calvin joined Tennessee in January. Both players had futures contracts.

The Titans roster is now at 75 players. At the start of training camp. NFL teams are allowed to have 90 players. The move today makes room for Tennessee to sign additional free agents.
