Nashville Sounds School Fresno on Education Day 5-2

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds picked up a 5-2 win over the Fresno Grizzlies Wednesday morning at Greer Stadium, in front of a season-high 10,079 fans in attendance for the second of three Sounds Education Days.

Tied 2-2 in the seventh with runners on the corners and one out, shortstop Blake Davis, who was already two-for-two on the day, lofted a ball into left field for a sacrifice-fly to drive in the go-ahead run. With his single and triple earlier in the game, Davis improves his hit streak to seven games.

The Sounds added another two runs: the first from Hainley Statia’s pinch-hit RBI-double to right field after the Davis sacrifice, and the final on a Cole Garner single in the eighth. Garner’s run scored second baseman Scooter Gennett, who reached base on balls in his final plate appearance to reach base for the 26th consecutive game, the PCL’s longest active streak.

Jesus Sanchez (3-0) picked up the win from the hill for Nashville, his third, retiring nine consecutive batters over three innings and five by strikeout. Michael Olmsted pitched a hitless eighth before making way for Rob Wooten, who faced the minimum to pick up his fifth save of the season.

Sounds pitchers combined to hold Fresno batters to three hits and totaled 14 strikeouts to mark a single-game season high, surpassing the team’s previous best of 13, set on April 19th in Iowa.

The Sounds captured the 2-1 lead in the third inning on a fielder’s choice throwing error sequence with two runners in scoring position. Anderson De La Rosa and Blake Davis each singled to start the frame and moved one base closer on Seidel’s sacrifice bunt.

In the next at-bat, Josh Prince bunted the ball towards first base, which Fresno pitcher Michael Kickham (0-4) fielded and, in trying to beat De La Rosa home, sailed to the backstop, allowing Blake Davis to score on the throwing error.

The Grizzlies scored first in the game with a Brett Pill RBI-single to centerfield in the first inning, scoring Kensuke Tanaka, who doubled and stole third. In the fourth, outfielder Juan Perez hit a triple to centerfield to score Johnny Monell and level the game at two runs apiece.

Both Fresno runs came off Sounds starting pitcher R.J. Seidel, who made his Triple-A debut after posting a 4.85 ERA in eight relief appearances with Double-A Huntsville. The 25-year-old allowed three hits across four innings of work, with six strikeouts and three walks.

The Sounds are back Thursday night (7:05pm) at Greer Stadium, for game three of four against the Fresno Grizzlies. Nashville’s RHP Frankie De La Cruz (1-4, 7.71) will get the start against Fresno’s RHP Boof Bonser (1-2, 4.97). It’s another BURGER KING Throwback Thursday, where fans can enjoy $2.00 concession items and receive special ticket pricing with a BK receipt.
