Rossview High School soccer season comes to an end with 2-0 Region 5-AAA loss to Hendersonville High School

Clarksville, TN — Rossview High School boys soccer team controlled play for most of the night May 14th — in the opening round of the Region 5-AAA tournament — versus Hendersonville, but couldn’t find the back of the net in a season-ending 2-0 loss.

The Hawks (14-5-2) possessed control of the ball 60 to 65 percent of the night, including out shooting the Commandos 12-6 overall and 8-4 in shots on goal for the night.

“No question about it,” Rossview coach Danny Chartrand said. “We had more than our share of the ball, I thought we matched up with them just fine and we moved the ball around them.

“In the first half we just didn’t get the last serve to where it needed to be and in the second half – until we went a man down – I thought we were pressing the issue, but unfortunate with a few balls rattling around in front of their goal that we just couldn’t get on the end of.”

Hendersonville (17-3-1) took the lead just seven minutes into the match on a goal by Bryce DeGuira, off a direct kick following a late foul call on Rossview’s Tyler Long.

The kick itself came as the head referee was talking to Long and a couple of other Hawks defenders about the late whistle, with the Commandos getting the ball set during the discussion and getting a shot off before the Rossview had a chance to react.

“I was running down the touch lines telling them to pay attention because once a ball is set its fair game,” Chartrand said. “But I though we lost our composure, and we’ve talked about keeping our heads, but we lost our composure for about five seconds and it put us behind the eight ball a little bit.”

That would be the way the first half would end, with Rossview’s best chance to score in the opening 40 minutes coming in the 14th minute on a direct kick by Long that was saved by a leaping Hendersonville keeper Drew Egan in the top left hand corner.

Egan finished the night with eight saves against the Hawks.

The second half would see Rossview come out and try to put pressure on the Commandos defense early on, pushing the ball up time after time, but the Hawks couldn’t find an opening for a clear shot at the Hendersonville goal.

The match would end for all intensive purposes over a four minute span between the 56th and 60th minutes, as Hendersonville’s DeGuira scored a second goal in the 56th minute, to put the Commandos up 2-0, and Rossview having to play a man down for the final 20 minutes after Long picked up his second yellow card of the night.

“It was going to be tough being a man down after Tyler (Long) got his second yellow card,” Chartrand said. “But I was really proud of the young men who were out on the field with their character and their fight, because you didn’t see any quit in them.”

In fact, the Hawks battled down to the very end, getting two point blank shots off in the final seconds of the match, but both were knocked away for saves by Hendersonville’s keeper.
