Austin Peay State University Baseball ends regular season with 16-5 win over SIU Edwardsville Cougars

Austin Peay State University Governors SportsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team defeated SIU Edwardsville 16-5, on May 18th at Raymond C. Hand Park, to sweep its three-game Ohio Valley Conference series versus the Cougars.

With the win, the 12th in a row to end the regular season, the Governors earn a second place finish in the OVC regular season standings – which gives Austin Peay a first-round bye in the OVC tournament in Jackson, TN.

The Govs will not play until May 23rd, 3:00pm, against the best remaining seed of May 22nd games between #3 Belmont and #6 Southeast Missouri or #4 Jacksonville State and #5 Eastern Kentucky.

In the season’s final contest, the Govs took advantage of some early wildness from Cougars starting pitcher Sam Hopkins to score a run in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead.

Dylan RinerDylan Riner opened the inning up by hitting the first pitch of the inning through the right side of the SIU Edwardsville infield.

Jordan Hankins and Craig Massoni would follow with back-to-back walks to load the bases, still with no one out.

That brought up Reed Harper, who hit into a 4-6-3 double play, with Riner coming in with the game’s first run.

Despite the double play, Harper finished the day with three hits.

Austin Peay would add to its lead in the bottom of the second inning by scoring two unearned runs to go up 3-0.

Michael DavisMichael Davis would open the inning by reaching on an error by Cougars third baseman Jacob Stewart and move to second base on a groundout by Matt Wollenzin.

Tommy Hager would then follow with a single up the middle, scoring Davis.

Hager recorded three hits against the Cougars.

Hager would steal second and Brett Carlson followed with a base on balls.

A passed ball would allow both runners to move up, with Hager scoring the second run of the inning on a groundout by Riner.

SIU Edwardsville would get on the board in the top of the third on a one-out double by Matt Highland, to make it 3-1 Govs, scoring Travis Becherer, who reached on a single.

Highland led SIUE with four hits and four RBI.

Austin Peay would get the run back – and then some – scoring three runs on three hits and three walks.

Massoni, Harper and Cody Hudson opened the inning with three straight singles – with Hudson’s hit driving in Massoni – while the other two runs came in off bases-loaded walks to Hager and Riner – to make it 6-1.

Cody HudsonHudson had three hits and drove in four on the day.

An error would open the door for three runs for the Cougars in the top of the fourth inning, as SIU Edwardsville cuts the Govs lead to 6-4.

The Govs would turn a double play to get the first two outs of the inning, but Stewart drew a walk and Drew Johnson reached on an error by Carlson to keep the inning going.

Nick Lombardo when followed with a single to load the bases, with Stewart coming in three pitches later on a passed ball.

Becherer would then be hit by a pitch to reload the bases, which was followed by a two-run single by Highland to cut the Govs lead down to just a pair of runs.

Austin Peay would respond by getting two of the runs back in the bottom of the inning, with Hudson – who singled – scoring when Lombardo dropped a fly ball in left field off the bat of Davis for the first run of the inning.

After Davis stole second base, he would come in to score on a single by Wollenzin to push the Govs lead back to an 8-4 advantage.

Austin Peay would tack on a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to go up 9-4.

Jordan HankinsHager opened the inning with an infield hit and scored all the way around from first base an out later on a double by Riner.

The Govs would use the long ball to score four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, with Hudson hitting the first of two home runs in the inning – a three-run shot, which also drove in Hankins and Harper; who had singled.

Davis would follow on the next pitch with a solo home run that hit off the foul pole down the left field line.

The Cougars would push across a run in the top of the eighth, on two hits, as Becherer reached on a one-out single and scored on a double by Highland to make it 13-5.

Austin Peay would close out the game’s scoring with three more runs in the bottom of the eighth on Massoni’s 15th home run of the season, which also drove in Hager and Hankins – who both reached on singles.

Kevin Corey (2-1) got the win, coming in to relieve Govs starter Ryan Quick in the fourth inning.
