Dunbar Cave State Park Programs for June 6th through June 8th, 2013

Clarksville, TNDunbar Cave State Natural Area has been a State Park since 1973. The cave and its surrounding 110 acres have considerable scenic, natural and historical significance. The entrance offered shelter to prehistoric Native Americans as far back as 10,000 years.

Dunbar Cave State Natural Area will present many nature programs this summer.

Upcoming events include: Kids Hike, Geology of our Area, Overnight Backpacking Training (Part 1), Tree Identification Hike and so much more!

Programs are free unless noted otherwise. All programs require reservations by the deadline listed. Programs with no reservations by the deadline are canceled.

All programs begin at the Visitor Center unless another site is listed.

*Dunbar Cave State Park reserves the right to cancel some programs in case of extreme heat or inclement weather.

Children must be accompanied by an adult (one adult for each three children). The age limits are definite – please do not sign up a child who is too young or too old for the program. Call 931.648.5526 for reservations.

Thursday, June 6th

Kids Hike*

Time: 9:00am–10:00am
Ages: All ages

Bring your kids out for a walk around the lake. They will learn about the natural world around them and get to ask lots of questions.

Presented By: Shawn Settle, Seasonal Interpretive Ranger
Reservations By: 4:30pm June 5th.


Night Hike*

Time: 8:00pm–9:30pm
Ages: All Ages

Walk the Short Loop trail (1 mile) with a Ranger at night as we explore the woods and lakeshore for nocturnal critters such as owls, deer, frog, and raccoons. Bring a flashlight and wear sturdy shoes.

Friday, June 7th

Geology of our Area*

Time: 2:00pm–3:00pm
Ages: 10-Adult

Ever wonder why there are so many caves and sinkholes in the Clarksville area? Learn why through a short lecture and walk to the cave entrance.

Reservations By: 4:30pm June 6th.


Overnight Backpacking Training (Part 1)*

Time: 6:00pm-7:00pm
Ages: 10 and up

Ever wanted to go for an overnight backpacking trip but were worried about how to pack and prepare? Do we have the class for you! We will discuss what to pack and how to prepare for an overnight stay in the wild. Please come dressed as if we were leaving for the night and pack a bag of gear you feel you will need.

Younger children may attend but not participate.

Saturday, June 8th

Tree Identification Hike

Time: 9:00am–10:00am
Ages: 6-Adult

Walk the Short Loop (1 mile) trail with a ranger and learn about some of the common trees you can find in the park and maybe even your back yard.

Fish, Insects and Mussels of the Red River

Time: 2:00pm–3:30pm
Ages: 6-adult

Have you ever wondered what really lives down there under the water? Come join us at Port Royal State Park near Adams, TN and I bet I can show you fish, mussels and insects that you have never seen before. Please wear closed toe shoes and clothing that can get wet (or waders). Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

Pawprints and Poop*

Time: 3:00pm-4:30pm
Ages: 5–12

Learn about the clues and signs that animals leave behind.
