APSU Baseball’s Gary McClure a candidate for University of Iowa Head Coaching Position

Austin Peay State University Governors Sports - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University Baseball head coach Gary McClure is a candidate for the University of Iowa baseball programs head coaching job.

According to Clarksville Online sources, McClure interviewed for the position last week.

Iowa Sports Information Director Steve Roe says that a decision has not been made yet for the head coaching position. Roe would not comment on the candidates that have applied for the job.

APSU Sports Information Director Brad Kirtley has confirmed that McClure paid a visit to Iowa and has interviewed for the job. According to Kirtley, he is a very successful baseball coach and a hot commodity.

McClure became APSU Baseball’s interim coach in the Fall of 1987 when Billy Merkel stepped down as head coach.
After two successful seasons, he was named the Governors head coach on June 23rd, 1988.

McClure was unavailable for comment.

McClure competed at Southeastern Community College, located in West Burlington, Iowa, from 1982-84. From 1984-86, he played for Cumberland University located in Lebanon, TN.

McClure is from Iowa. He and his wife, Amy have family there.
