After cutting the ribbon, Mayor Bowers took the opportunity to ask what Habitat and the ReStore did to earn green certification and how that translated to employee habits at home.

Habitat ReStore Manager Kathryn Norbeck-Dayley, explained they have increased their recycling efforts and changed their routing pick-up system to save time and fuel. She explained that volunteers and employees are trained on how to recycle within the store. In 2012, the ReStore diverted 379 tons of items from the landfill and each year that they have tracked the diversion rate the amount has increased.

One board member mentioned that the very concept of the ReStore is to reuse and repurpose items for the benefit of future homeowners served through Habitat for Humanity.

Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County Shelby Logsdon, added that they have also worked to reduce the amount of paper they use and adjust the temperature settings when they are out of the building and during working hours which has resulted in savings.

Board members and employees agreed that they have also made changes at home to be better environmental stewards. Habitat for Humanity Board President Gary Norris mentioned carrying the efforts not only into his home but into his workplace with DBS & Associates Engineering.
