Lone Oak Picnic provides great food and entertainment to the Cunningham Community

The Civitan ClubCunningham, TN – On Saturday, July 27th, the Central Civitan Club held the 105th Annual Lone Oak Picnic from 9:00am to 3:00pm at the Central Civitan Building located on Alonzo Place in Southern Montgomery County. By 11:00am, the parking area was overflowing with cars and trucks of those in attendance.

“This morning it was threatening rain, but the sun came out and we have a beautiful day for the event,” stated Central Civitan officer Larry Pitts.

The Back Lot Pickers provided the musical entertainment for the event. Donald Greene and Lucian Greene, along with Jimmy Meek on bass, are always a hit with the local community. Kyle Greene and others joined in on a few songs during the day.

There was a good turnout this year. The pavilion was always full of people eating and enjoying the music.

The Memory Lane Cruisers car club put on a car show for the event. There were always plenty of people standing around talking cars and admiring the vehicles.

Boy Scout Troop 546 was selling Funnel Cakes and fried Oreos as a fundraiser for the troop. For the kids, there were inflatables that could be played on all day with a $2.00 wrist band and face painting.

Beside BBQ, the Lone Oak Picnic is also known for candidates giving political speeches. Even though this was not an election year, a few elected officials and candidates for next years elections were on hand to talk to the audience.

The speakers this year were; Marsha Blackburn, U.S. Representative for Tennessee’s 7th congressional district; John S. Fuson, Montgomery County Sheriff; Tyler Barrett, Candidate next year for Montgomery County Sheriff; Brenda Radford, Montgomery County Trustee; Kelly Jackson, Montgomery County Clerk; and Dalton Harrison, Montgomery County Commissioner District 6.

Erwin Greene, 89, was the oldest person attending the event this year. Greene, a World War II veteran, has been coming to the picnic off and off since 1937. He got up early, got dressed, and was waiting for his family to come pick him up at 9:30am. He wanted to make sure he got to the picnic by 10:00am.

The Central Civitan prepared 4 whole hogs, 28 shoulders and 200 chickens for this years event that were all cooked in the BBQ pits near the Civitan building. The BBQ being served came right off the pit to your plate.

By 1:00pm, the Civitan were down to 1 hog, 50 chickens and 4 shoulders.

The Lone Oak Picnic is always a time for the local community to come out and talk with neighbors, family and friends while listening to music and enjoying some fine food. It’s also a good time to learn about the issues facing the community.

The Central Civitan has sponsored the Lone Oak Picnic since 1975. All the money raised is used in the communities south of the Cumberland River through several projects sponsored by the Central Civitan Club. The Central Civitan Club, for example, supports the local Boy and Girl Scout troops. The club provides financial assistance to victims of house fires in the community.

They also fund scholarships for and support many educational and extra-curricular activities of the students, teachers and staff at Montgomery Central High School, Montgomery Central Middle School and Montgomery Central Elementary School as well as Cumberland Heights Elementary School.

“If you missed it this year, then come out next year and support us, ” said Pitts. “The Lone Oak Picnic is held every year on the last Saturday of July.”
