Late turnover dooms Clarksville High School Football in one-point loss to Goodpasture

Clarksville High School WildcatsClarksville, TN – Just when it looked like Clarksville High’s football team was going to pull out a come-from-behind victory, August 22nd at Hilda J. Richardson Field over Goodpasture, a turnover in the final 30 seconds doomed the Wildcats in a 22-21 loss.

Clarksville High (0-1) had seen the Cougars take the lead, 22-21, with 1:13 left in the game, on a two-point conversion run by Carter Wiseman, following a 77-yard pass to Wiseman from Carson Gregg.

Gregg completed 4-of-5 passing attempts for 119 yards.

But the Wildcats got great field position on the ensuing kickoff, with Derwin Whitt returning the kickoff 46 yards out to midfield, with just over a minute to play.

Clarksville High’s offense would get down to the Cougars 9-yard line with just under 30 seconds left, as the Wildcats got a 20-yard pass from Jeff Webb to Chris Schlangen on their first play followed by a 21-yard run by Webb to make it first-and-goal at the nine.

Webb would lead the Wildcats in rushing with 123 yards and passing with 108.

But a high snap from center went over Webb’s head, leaving the Wildcats trying to come up with the ball for a final field-goal chance.

Whitt had a chance to recover the ball, but instead of falling on the ball, he tried to pick it up and hit from behind by the Goodpasture defense – with Wade Arrington falling on the ball for the Cougars – to seal away the win with the only turnover of the game by either side.

Goodpasture took the first lead of the game in the second quarter on an 8-yard run by Wiseman, with 7:02 left in the quarter, to break a scoreless deadlock.

Wiseman led all rushers with 161 yards on 30 carries.

Clarksville high would tie the game on the following possession putting together its best drive of the first half, going 80 yards on 11 plays – with Webb taking in in from 22 yards out.

It was the first of three touchdowns on the night for Webb.

The Cougars retook the lead in the third quarter on a 32-yard run by Jaylen Moore, to give Goodpasture a 147 advantage heading into the final quarter of play.

Clarksville High wouldn’t be able to do anything with its final drive of the third quarter, but the Wildcats offense would come to life in the fourth quarter scoring on each of its first two possessions in the period.

The first, a 14-play 86-yard drive, capped by Webb going in from 7-yards out – with 3:35 left in the game — tied the score, 14-14.

The Wildcats defense would force the Cougars to punt the ball back after holding them to a three-and-out, with Whitt returning the punt to the Goodpasture 26-yard line, with 2:15 left.

Clarksville took advantage to the great field position, needing only two plays to go take its first lead of the night, 21-14, on a 17-yard run by Webb.

Clarksville High will return to action August 30th, as they travel to Ravenwood High.
