Austin Peay State University Women’s Golf at Chris Banister Golf Classic Labor Day Weekend

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUGlenco, AL – Austin Peay State University women’s golf team will open the 2013-14 season this Labor Day weekend when it travels south to compete in the 18th Annual Chris Banister Golf Classic at Silver Lakes Golf Course.

The 54-hole event will be played on the 5,943-yard, par-72 layout—it is a Robert Trent Jones Course. The teams will play 18 holes each day, Sunday-Tuesday. It will feature six teams, including host Ohio Valley Conference foe Jacksonville State along with Belmont. Also slated to participate are Lipscomb, UALR and North Georgia.

“We are looking forward to getting the season started,” APSU coach Sara Robson said. “It has been a quick week of practice and qualifying. The girls came back to school ready to play and their hard work this summer has paid off.”

The entire Lady Govs team will compete in Alabama. However, the counting team will include two seniors, one sophomore and two freshmen. Sophomore Jessica Cathey picked up where she left off last spring by winning the Lady Govs qualifier by five shots. The Hixson native finished tied for ninth at last spring’s OVC tourney, including a second-round hole-in-one.

However, it was Orlando, FL, freshman, Morgan Gardner, who was second in the qualifier at 211 while seniors Rachel Deaton and Tala Mumford were two strokes back at 213 with newcomer Morgan Kauffman claiming the final spot after shooting a 220.

Junior Meghan Mueller along with freshmen Amber Bosworth and Kelsey Schutt will play as individuals during the holiday weekend.

Silver Lakes is one of 11 Robert Trent Jones Trail golf sites in Alabama. The 2014 OVC Golf Championship will be held at one the site, Muscle Shoals, in April. As a result, the Lady Govs hope this opening weekend tourney will give them a feel for the design nuances.

“The greens at a Robert Trent Jones Course like Silver Lakes are always tricky,” Robson said. ‘”So it will be important to spend some extra time on them during the practice round so we are prepared for the tournament come Sunday.”
