West Creek High School soccer picks up historic win over Northeast High School

West Creek High School Coyotes - Clarksville, TNNortheast High School Eagles - Clarksville, TNClarksville, TN – West Creek High School’s girls soccer team converted a free kick into a goal midway through the first half of their District 10-AAA match, September 3rd versus Northeast High School and its defense did the rest in picking up its first win in school history over the Lady Eagles, 1-0.

Junior Savannah Young scored the lone goal for West Creek (4-1, 1-1 District 10-AAAA), in the 17th minute, as she took a free kick from just outside the far right-hand corner of the penalty box and lofted it over Northeast keeper Jessica Clark – who got one hand on it – and into the net for a 1-0 lead.

“It wasn’t a pretty win, but a win is a win and I’ll take it any day of the week,” West Creek coach James Moore said. “Northeast has always given us fits and in the district they are probably our biggest rival and we’ve really worked hard to get ready for this game.

“We didn’t do all the things right that we wanted too, but we did enough right to pull out the win.”

Northeast (4-1, 0-1 District 10-AAA) had several chances to tie the match in the first half, including missing a free kick in the 23rd minute in front of the Lady Coyotes penalty box and an open look from the right side of the West Creek goal in the 32nd minute.

“We really didn’t play well in the first half and they took advantage of the foul in our defensive third (of the field) and were able to put it on goal,” Northeast coach Richard Frost said. “Our keeper had a good shot at it, but she just missed it and that set the pace for them the rest of the first half.”

The second half saw the Eagles really turn up the pressure on the Lady Coyotes defense, keeping the ball on West Creek’s side of midfield most of the half and out-shooting the hosts 9-2 after intermission – with all nine shots being on goal.

But the Lady Coyotes defense and their keeper Haley Claiborne were up to the task, as they held the Lady Eagles off the scoreboard – including two huge saves Claiborne in the final 90 seconds to seal away the win.

“Northeast just controlled the second half,” Moore said. “It seemed like everything they threw at us we stopped and we owe a big part of the win to our defense and our keeper.”

Overall, Northeast outshot West Creek 20-9 and 13-7 in shots on-goal, while also holding a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Claiborne had 12 saves in goal for West Creek, in recording the shutout, while Clark had six saves for Northeast.

West Creek returns to action September 10th, when they host Kenwood in a 6:00pm match, while Northeast hosts Henry County September 5th.
