Clarksville Academy CougarsClarksville, TN – The Clarksville Academy Cougars rebounded from their first loss of the season last week by knocking off a tough nosed East Robertson team 33-29 at Simpson field.

The Cougars fell behind early as the Indians took the opening kickoff and went 63 yards on 8 plays aided by two fourth down conversions. The second of which resulted in a 45 yard TD pass from East Robertson’s Matthew Tomlin to Brendon Moore. The extra point was missed and the Indians had a 6-0 lead.

The Academy’s first possession ended at the Indians 9 yard line after they failed to convert on a fourth down attempt. East Robertson ate up the rest of the first quarter clock with an 11 play drive that stalled when the Indian’s Clayton Key fumbled and the Academy recovered at their own 37.

The Academy used the momentum from the turnover and put together a 6 play, 63 yard drive capped off by senior Jacob Rugen’s two yard burst up the middle for a touchdown. The Academy scored again with 3:26 left to go until halftime when Josh Anderson took a handoff on a sweep play and raced 56 yards down the sideline to put the Cougars up 14-6.

Tomlin connected with Moore once again for a 35 yard TD pass with 34 seconds left in the half, and after Marquece Bell rambled over the goal line for the two point conversion, East Robertson had knotted the game at 14 going into halftime.

On the second play of the third quarter Academy quarterback Michael Conn got loose and ran 40 yards to East Robertson’s 45 yard line where he was stripped from behind and the Indians recovered at their own 40 yard line. The Indians then went 60 yards in 7 plays for a touchdown. Bell ran the ball for 59 of those yards and scored from 12 yards out to put the Indians back on top at 21-14.

The Cougars put together a 12 play 65 yard drive next, and with 1:28 left in the third quarter Rugen hit junior Josh Anderson for a 15 yard scoring pass. The Cougars muffed the extra point snap and found themselves trailing by one, 21-20 heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter the Cougars defense came up big twice. With the Indians driving, the Cougar defense held on a fourth down and 2 at the 9 yard line, turning the ball over to their offense who then proceeded to go 93 yards on 12 plays with Rugen scoring from 18 yards out. The Academy failed on a 2pt conversion attempt, but had the lead at 26-21 with 1:49 to play.

The Indians drove to the Cougars 20 yard line with 26 seconds on the clock just needing a touchdown to win the game. On first down at the 20, Indian quarterback Matthew Tomlin was intercepted by the Academy’s Josh Anderson at the 5 yard line and Anderson raced 95 yards untouched for a touchdown with just 18 seconds left in the game.

The excitement wasn’t over as East Robertson’s Clayton Key took the ensuing kickoff back 65 yards for a touchdown and the 2pt conversion made the score 33-29 with 8 seconds left. An unsportsmanlike penalty call allowed the Indians to attempt an onside kick at the Cougars 45 yard line, but the kick was fielded by the Cougars to ensure the victory 33-29.

The Cougars ground out over 300 yards rushing on the night and East Robertson’s Bell finished with 116 yards on the ground.

The Academy improved to 2-1 on the year and East Robertson fell to 1-2. The Cougars travel to Collinwood next Friday.
