Huge second quarter powers Vanderbilt Commodores to 38-3 victory over APSU Governors Football

Austin Peay State University Governors Sports - APSUNashville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s football team would hang in with Southeastern Conference member Vanderbilt University of a quarter, but the Commodores would get their offense rolling in the second 12 minutes of play by scoring 35 second-quarter points on the way to a 38-3 victory over the Governors at Vanderbilt Stadium.

After being held to a field goal in the first quarter, Vanderbilt (1-1) would finally get into the end zone on its fourth drive of the night, going 76 yards on nine plays, with Brian Kimbrow plowing in from six yards out for the TD, with 12:50 left before intermission.

Vandy would make it 17-0 with its second touchdown of the second quarter, this time going in on a one-yard run by quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels with 9:23 left in the first half.

The score was set up three plays earlier on a 56-yard pass play from Samuels to Jonathan Krause – the longest play of the game — moving the ball from Vandy 40 to the Govs six yard line.

The Commodores would make it three straight drives ending in touchdowns on its next possession, going 49 yards on five plays with Jerron Seymour going in from one yard out with 5:17 left before intermission to put the Commodores up 24-0

The next Vandy score was set up by its defense, as the Commodores pinned the Govs deep in their own end of the field, forcing Austin Peay to punt from its own four yard line and after the return taking over at the APSU 39.

Vanderbilt would take advantage right away, as it only needed one play to make it 31-0, with Carta-Samuels hooking up with Jordan Matthews for a 39-yard TD throw.

Matthews finished the game with six catches for 111 yards.

The final Vanderbilt touchdown of the first half was set up by a turnover, with Austin Peay’s Omar Williams losing a fumble at the Govs 18, with just 46 second left.

Three plays later, Carta-Samuels scored his second touchdown of the quarter, this time going in from eight yards out to give the Commodores a comfortable 38-0 lead at intermission.

Vanderbilt first score of the game came on their second drive of the game in the first quarter going 57 yards on 11 plays, capped off by a Carey Spear 25-yard field goal.

The field goal came after Vanderbilt had a touchdown waved off after a replay showing Matthews failed to maintain control of the ball before going out of bounds.

In the second half, the Governors shut the Commodores out while scoring their first points of the 2013 season — coming on a 20-yard field goal by Walter Spears with 4:33 left in the quarter capping an eight-play, 62-yard drive by Austin Peay.

Tim Phillips had a huge hand in setting up the field goal, ripping off a 48-yard run from the APSU 47 down to the Vandy five.

Phillips finished with 67 yards on nine carries to lead the Govs.

The points ended a run of 123:18 seconds since the Govs last score – that coming in the third quarter of Austin Peay’s last game of the 2012 season versus Tennessee Tech.

Overall, Vanderbilt outgained the Govs 442-139 in total offense, holding Austin Peay to just six first downs – with the first of those coming at the 13:36 mark of the third quarter.
