Clarksville, TN – A mixture of veterans and youth will represent Austin Peay State University women’s golf team when it participates in the MSU Drake Creek Invitational, Monday and Tuesday, at Drake Creek Golf Course.
Six of the 11-team field will be Ohio Valley Conference schools, including host Murray State, Tennessee State, Belmont, Tennessee Tech and SIUE along with the Lady Govs. Non-conference teams Marshall (Conference USA), Western Kentucky (Sun Belt), Dayton (Atlantic 10), Jackson State (South West Atlantic) and Northern Kentucky (Atlantic Sun) round out the field on the par-72, 6,178-yard layout.
In the Lady Govs second fall tourney, a pair of seniors—Tala Mumford and Rachel Deaton—and a trio of freshmen—Amber Bosworth, Morgan Gardner and Morgan Kauffman—will compete as APSU team members while junior Meghan Mueller, sophomore Jessica Cathey and freshman Kelsey Schutt will play as individuals.
The lineup was based on scores from the Chris Banister Invitational in which Bosworth, playing as an individual in his first college tourney, gained a Top 10 finish with a team-best 236, including a team-tourney low of 75 in the final round.
Mumford and Deaton overcame struggling opening rounds to finish strong with at 237 and 238, respectively. Gardner also had a 238 in her first college tourney while Kauffman came in at 242. Robson was impressed how well her younger team members performed in their college action.
“I was proud of the team last week as the ladies put some good scores together at JSU,” APSU coach Sara Robson said. “There were some course management lessons that were learned by the younger players that will only help us in the future. To be successful this week we will need to be confident in our abilities, maintain good tempo with our swings for 54 holes, and stay focused.
“The keys to scoring well will be controlling our approach shots and maintaining good speed on the greens.”
“We are looking for our seniors to lead us this week on the course,” Robson said. “And it will be imperative that the freshmen be mentally tough as this will be some of their first time playing 36 holes in one day.
“Playing 36 holes is all mental. If they are mentally tough and are good about keeping their body hydrated as well as eating properly they will handle it well. Having a positive attitude and not worrying about how long you have been on the course or how many holes you have played as well as not listening to fellow competitors complain and count holes are things we have to guard against in order to stay focused.”
The Lady Govs finished seventh in last season’s tournament, with Mumford, Cathey and Mueller all competing. It will be the fourth time Mumford has competed in the event and third for Deaton.
