Tennessee Titans lose heartbreaker in overtime to Houston Texans 30-24

Tennessee TitansNashville, TN – With no time left on the clock in overtime, the Houston Texans had the ball on the Tennessee Titans 28 with the game tied at 24. Texans kicker Randy Bullock attempts a 46 yard field goal that hits the left upright and is no good sending the game into overtime.

In overtime, Houston wins the coin toss and elect to receive. Keshawn Martin takes the Rob Bironas kickoff out to the Houston 22. Matt Schaub, in 10 plays, takes the Texans down to the Tennessee 3. On 3rd and 3, from the shotgun, Schaub hits DeAndre Hopkins on the right for a short 3 yard pass and a touchdown. Texans beat the Titans 30-24.

Houston got on the board on the first drive of the game. Schaub connected with tight end Garrett Graham for a one yard touchdown pass.

The Titans answered with a 14 play drive that ended with Jake Locker throwing a a 6 yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Kendall Wright.

The defenses held both sides in check until late in the 2nd quarter. Titans’ Bernard Pollard intercepts Schaub at the Tennessee 32 and runs the ball back 32 yards until finally pushed out of bounds at the Texan 23.

With 1:25 remaining in the half, Locker is sacked for a 9 yard loss. Chris Johnson goes up the middle for a 1 yard gain. Then, Locker hits Nate Washington for a short 2 yard pass. Bironas comes on and hits a 47 yard field goal to give the Titans a 10-7 lead at the half.

In the 3rd quarter, Schaub hits Owen Daniels for a 12 yard touchdown to take the lead 14-10.

Early in the 4th quarter, the Titans are backed up on their own 1 yard line. Johnson runs up the middle and is stopped by Texan middle line backer Joe Mays. Houston challenges the call on the field claiming Johnson was tackled in the end zone. The play is reversed for a safety.

At 10:45, Tennessee puts together a 9 play touchdown drive ending with a 10 yard pass from Locker to Delanie Walker taking back the led 17-16.

On the Texans next drive, Alterraun Verner intercepts a Schaub pass intended for DeAndre Hopkins and runs it back 23 yards for a touchdown.

Down 24-16, with 3 minutes remaining, the Texans move the ball down to the Tennessee 1 yard line. Arian Foster takes the ball off left guard for a touchdown. Houston attempts a two-point conversion to tie the game. Foster runs behind right tackle and into the end zone tying the game at 24.

Titans quarterback Jake Locker was 17 of 30 for 148 yards and two touchdowns. He was sacked four times. Chris Johnson ran for 86 yards on 25 attempts. Kendall Wright caught 7 balls for 54 yards and a touchdown. Nate Washington pulled in three balls for 50 yards.

For the Texans, Matt Schaub threw for 298 yards completing 26 throws of 48 attempted for 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Ben Tate ran for 93 yards on 9 attempts breaking one for 60 yards. Arian Foster had 92 rushing yards on 19 attempts and a touchdown.

DeAndre Hopkins stepped up after Andre Johnson was shaken up in the fourth quarter. Hopkins ended the game with 117 receiving yards on 7 receptions and scored the game winning touchdown. Johnson had 76 yards on 8 receptions before leaving the game.

In the first half, Chris Johnson passed Ernest Givins (8,704) for fourth place on the franchise’s all-time list for career net yards. Johnson trails only Eddie George (12,153), wide receiver Derrick Mason (11,202) and running back Earl Campbell (9,292) on the list.

With an eight-yard carry in the first quarter, Chris Johnson became the third player in franchise history to reach 7,000 career rushing yards.  The sixth-year veteran joined Eddie George (10,009) and Earl Campbell (8,574) as the only Titans/Oilers to do so.

In the first quarter, the Titans scored on a six-yard touchdown pass from Jake Locker to Kendall Wright, the team’s first touchdown pass of the season.  It was the fifth career touchdown reception for Wright.

With a 17-yard reception in the first quarter, Nate Washington extended his streak of consecutive games with at least one reception to 80, including all 66 games he has played as a member of the Titans.

The loss takes the Titans to 1-1 on the season. The Texans are undefeated.

The Tennessee Titans next game is Sunday, September 22nd at LP Field as they play host to the San Diego Chargers. The game starts at 12:00pm.
