Memphis, TN – Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team ended a seven match losing streak with a decisive three-set sweep (25-10, 25-20, 25-11) of La Salle, Friday afternoon in the Tiger Invitational at Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
Senior Lauren Henderson dominated the opening set with her serve. Austin Peay (3-11) trailed 3-2 when she stepped behind the line and she promptly served up eight consecutive points, including a pair of aces, to give APSU a 10-4 lead it would not relinquish.
Henderson made sure APSU secured the opening-set win as she served up a 5-0 run to end the set, including her third ace of the frame.
La Salle (1-14) pushed Austin Peay in the second set, leading 5-4 early on. It would take a 10-6 Lady Govs run to turn the tide in the frame, giving APSU a 15-11 lead. Austin Peay would push the lead to five points – its largest advantage in the second set – thanks to junior Hillary Plybon’s kill at 21-16. The Lady Govs would maintain that advantage en route to the 25-20 victory.
Henderson again proved pivotal in the third as opened up the set with a pair of service aces to give APSU a 6-1 lead and force an early timeout. Austin Peay would roll from there, allowing La Salle to score back-to-back points just twice in the set. Fittingly, the Lady Govs sealed the match win with senior Calyn Hull’s second service ace for the 25-12 win.
“Our aggressive serving kept them out of system and that helped our cause all match,” said Lady Govs head coach Taylor Mott. “We also played a lot more efficiently on offense, which didn’t hurt. Sammie (Ebright) really showed up in our two matches today. She showed us what she is capable of offensively, it is something for her to build on tomorrow.
Henderson finished the match with seven service aces – one shy of tying the APSU single-match record. She also had five kills and a pair of blocks. Redshirt freshman Sammie Ebright led the Lady Govs offense with 11 kills. Austin Peay scored 38 kills with a .286 attack percentage.
Rachel Finkbeiner led La Salle with six kills. The Explorers had 22 kills but finished with 20 errors for a .022 attack percentage.
Austin Peay concludes its stay in Memphis with a noon, Saturday contest against host Memphis.
