APSU Governors Golf climbs to 2nd place at Badger Invitational

Austin Peay State University Governors Sports - APSUMadison, WI –The good news is Austin Peay State University men’s golf team jumped four spots into second place after Day 2 of the Badger Invitational. The bad news is the Governors will need a near miracle finish to catch South Carolina in Tuesday’s final round.

In more difficult conditions, the Governors fired a second round 293 for a two-round 583 score, Monday, at University Ridge Golf Club. But that score is 18 shots behind Southeastern Conference South Carolina, which followed Sunday’s opening round 282 with a 283, Monday.

The Gamecocks were the only team to shoot under par Monday during a day that saw high 60 temperatures with winds gusting to almost 20 miles per hour.

Missouri-Kansas City and Kansas are tied for third at 584 while USC Upstate is fifth at 586. Host Wisconsin is in 12th at 602.

Individually, no Governor was below par during Day 2. However, both Anthony Bradley (72-73) and Austin Kramer (73-72) are tied for 11th individually at 145—Kramer had an eagle 3 on the par 5 No. 9. Sophomore Chris Baker bounced back from Sunday’s 76 to shoot 73 Monday. Kramer and Baker both bogeyed 17 and 18, watching their possible sub-par rounds slip away while Bradley three-putted 18. Trey Tarpley shot his second consecutive 75 while fellow senior Marco Iten, after shooting an opening-round 70, struggled to a 78, Monday.

“When we saw the results, we were a little surprised that we were in second,” APSU coach Kirk Kayden said. “We really didn’t play that well today–you have to hand it to South Carolina for playing as well as they did. However, we feel a little better after seeing where we are (second).

“We just need to finish the round strong tomorrow if we are going to have another quality finish.”

The Governors, in fact, have finished in the Top 5 in 14 straight regular-season tournaments, discounting both the last two Ohio Valley Conference tournaments (second and first) and the NCAA Regional (seventh).

“We are one of six or seven teams that are all bunched together,” Kayden said. “We have had an incredible run of Top 5 finishes the last two years and the guys have that as a goal…to keep that streak alive.

“We need to focus in on the final round. We know the pin placement is going to be tough as it has have been in the final rounds over the last couple of weeks. We need to play smart and play to our strengths, keep the ball in play off the tee. We also just need to finish the round off like we are capable.”
