Rossview High School wins Region 5-AAA Girls Golf Title, Clarksville High School’s Hunter Richardson advances on Boy’s side

Rossview High School HawksClarksville High School WildcatsClarksville, TN – Rossview High School’s girls golf team was a runaway winner of the Region 5-AAA golf tournament, September 30th at Swan Lake Golf Course, earning a chance to advance to the state tournament; while Clarksville High School’s Hunter Richardson was the lone local boys golfer to make the state tournament field.

After needing a two-hole playoff to win last week’s District 10-AAA title, the Lady Hawks left no doubt in taking the region crown, finishing 10 shots in front of runner-up Station Camp High School and 13 shots better than Clarksville High – the team they edged in last week’s playoff.

“I think winning that playoff last week really gave them the extra confidence that they needed to know they could do it and take them to a different level,” Rossview coach Michael Brice said. “I knew we hadn’t played our best golf as a whole team yet this year and if we did we had the potential to win and advance to state.”

Rossview’s Haney Long was the tournament’s low medalist, with a two-over par round of 73, four shots better than teammate Caroline Caudill and Station Camp’s Leah Deagle — who both carded six-over 77’s.

“I feel like a big weight has been lifted off our shoulders and that all the hard work we’ve done is paying off,” Long said. “We had a great mindset going in, we were very confident that we knew how we could play, and we just came out an executed and never gave up until the last putt.”

Along with Rossview’s Long, Caudill and Reagan Greene — who advance as a team to the state finals – Clarksville High’s Megan Beane will advance as an individual.

On the boys side, Hendersonville High School fired a blistering team-total of 297 to take the team title, and advance to the state tournament, by 12 shots over runner-up Clarksville High.

“Hendersonville has a great squad and we knew we had to be on the top of our game to have a chance to beat them and we were not at the top of our game,” Clarksville High coach Adam Welch said. “Hunter (Richardson) and Aaron (King) played well, but the other three are much better golfers than their scores reflect.

“I feel horrible for Sam (Davis) and Peyton (Williams), as seniors, that this is their last round and I know if you asked them neither one would be happy with their round.”

Individually, Richardson took low medalist honors, with a three-under par round of 68, and will advance to the state tournament as an individual.

“I just tried to go out and stick to what I wanted to do today,” Richardson said. “I tried not to have any three putts and not get wrapped up in thinking that this is regions and just play my game.

“I’ve never been to state; this will be the first time. I’ve always seem to play really bad in the region tournament before, but I guess I pulled through today.”

Next up for Rossview’s girls team and Richardson will be the TSSAA State Golf Championships on October 8th and 9th at the WilliowBrook Golf Course in Manchester, TN.
