APSU Women’s Soccer on the road this weekend against Tennessee Tech, Belmont

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team returns to its wandering ways this weekend when it travels through the midstate area for a pair of Ohio Valley Conference matches.

The Lady Govs travel to Cookeville for a 3:00pm (CT), Friday match at Tennessee Tech and return down Interstate 24 for a 2:00pm Sunday tilt against Belmont.

Austin Peay (6-1-2, 1-0-1 OVC) threw its hat into the ring as an OVC favorite last weekend, defeating defending conference champion UT Martin, 2-1, and salvaging a 1-1 tie against Southeast Missouri to remain undefeated through two OVC matches for the first time since 2008.

Senior Tatiana Ariza (Tennessee Sportswriters Association Player of the Week) and junior Frankie Carbajal (College Soccer 360 Primetime Performer) earned well-deserved accolades for their performances last week.

Tatiana ArizaBoth played a huge role in toppling UT Martin; Ariza’s 18th-minute goal gave Austin Peay its first lead against the Skyhawks since 2006, and Carbajal’s 63rd-minute game-winner would snap a five-match losing streak in the series between the two squads that dated back to 2006.

Austin Peay’s offense – led by Ariza’s conference-best eight goals – is putting up an OVC-high 2.0 goals per game, the only conference team averaging two goals a contest. The Lady Govs back their high-octane offense with a stingy defense that’s allowing less than a goal per contest (0.89 goals allowed per game) through nine regular-season matches.

Frankie CarbajalTennessee Tech (3-8-0, 1-1-0 OVC) sent shockwaves through the OVC when they knocked off SIU Edwardsville in last weekend’s conference-opener, but dropped a 4-2 match to conference-leading Eastern Illinois, Sunday. Senior forward Ellie Iaciofano leads the conference with four assists and ranks fifth with 10 points; she assisted on Shannon Rountree’s game-winner in Friday’s match against the Cougars.

Belmont (2-5-2, 0-1-1 OVC) scored just one goal in its first two OVC matches, escaping with a tie against SIU Edwardsville to salvage the weekend. The Bruins offense has struggled at times in 2013, scoring more than one goal in just two of nine matches, and scoring just two goals total since September 13th. Senior keeper Nicole Berner’s 43 saves ranks fifth in the OVC.

Austin Peay returns home to host a pair of Illinois schools when Eastern Illinois (7:00pm, Friday, October 11th) and SIU Edwardsville (2:00pm, Sunday, October 13th) visit Morgan Brothers Field.

Last Time Against This Weekend’s Opponents

The Lady Govs defense carried the day against Belmont and Tennessee Tech last season, shutting out both the Bruins and the Eagles.

In the October 7th match against Belmont, the Lady Govs netted three first-half goals – Tatiana Ariza bookended the scoring, while Joceline Quiceno’s fifth-minute goal was the middle tally. Ariza and Quiceno got Austin Peay out to a hot start, each scoring within the game’s first five minutes. Haylee Shoaff made eight saves for the clean sheet.

Ariza scored twice in the Lady Govs October 19th match against Tennessee Tech as well, scoring both goals in Austin Peay’s 2-0 win. Shoaff was again brilliant in net, making seven saves for her fourth shutout in five matches.

Keep An Eye On

Natalia ArizaWith one point, senior Natalia Ariza would pass Jessica Hosse (2004-07) and take sole possession of fifth place on the Lady Govs career list with 33 points. She remains one goal away from tying Erica Dengler (2003-06) and Kaylee Yago (2002-05) for fifth in Austin Peay history.

Moving Up the Chart: With 116 career points, Tatiana Ariza needs to average 4.1 points over her final eight regular-season contests to tie Eastern Illinois’ Beth Liesen’s (2000-03) 149 career points. In five career games against Tennessee Tech and Belmont, Ariza has 10 career points.

Joceline QuicenoSenior Joceline Quiceno needs one goal to tie her sister Andy for eighth in career goals scored with 11.

The Lady Govs are 4-1-2 all-time against Belmont, having not lost to the Bruins since 2008. Austin Peay is just 3-8-0 all-time against the Eagles, but have won two of the last three meetings.

Senior midfielder Morgan Zigelsky needs one assist to tie Erin Mitchell (2002-04) for fifth on the career charts with nine.
