After a sluggish 45th-place finish at Louisville last season, the Govs put together a 24th-place finish in this season’s edition of the prestigious race in the Bluegrass State.

Austin Peay was paced for a third consecutive race by freshman Martin Rejman, who finished 23rd overall and fifth among Division I runners with a 26:14.24 mark.

“Can’t complain about what Martin did today,” said head coach Doug Molnar. “A top-25 for a freshman in a big meet like this is a solid race.”

Freshman Daniel Hamm was the second Gov across the line with a 49th-place, 26:43.8 mark in the eight-kilometer race, while classmate Hunter Guthrie was 118th with a 27:32.30 mark. Hamm’s finish has counted toward the Govs team score in all four races, while Guthrie has been a scorer in three of four meets.

Freshman Alex Haycraft (28:21.28, 182nd) and senior Tyler Kepley (28:39.66, 203rd) rounded out the Govs counted scores. Kepley’s mark improves on his 254th-place finish at Louisville in 2012.

Freshmen Kyle Harmon (28:46.57, 213th), Nathan Sparks (29:03.27, 228th) and Thomas Owen (30:17.51, 265th) and sophomore Cory Nwaiji (29:34.21, 245th) also competed for the Govs.

“We’re extremely young, so it’s going to take time on the men’s side,” Molnar said. “These guys keep getting better each week and that’s all we can ask for. I’m very happy we improved on last season’s finish.”

The Lady Govs return to action at the Front Runner Invite in Chattanooga, October 19th, Austin Peay’s final race before the OVC Cross-Country Championships.
