Montgomery Central Soccer has season come to an end against defending State Champion

Nashville, TN – Montgomery Central High School hung around with defending A/AA state champion Christ Presbyterian Academy for a half, Oct. 22nd in the semifinals of the Region 6-A/AA tournament, but the Lions pulled away in the second half with five goals for a 7-0 victory.

The Lady Indians (15-3) only trailed 2-0 at halftime, but saw the Lions score their third goal just 21 seconds into the second half, when Olivia Ball fired a shot high into the top –left corner of the net.

“They’re the defending state champions and they came out and showed that’s it almost a different level of soccer when you come a play a team like them,” Montgomery Central coach Gary Gossett said. “Our girls gave it 100 percent and did the best they could and they fought the whole game and I’m very proud of them.”

Christ Presbyterian Academy (8-8-3) would make it 4-0 in the 46th minute, with Kara Wegner scoring off a through ball from Caroline Conley.

Ball would score her second goal of the second half, and third of the game, in match in the 62nd minute to make it 5-0, as she blasted a shot into the net from about 20 yards out.

The final two goals of the match were scored by Grace Conwell, with the first coming in the 66th minute on a ball that the Lady Indians weren’t able to clear from out in front of their net and the other coming in the 71st minute off a rebound.

“We didn’t do much subbing tonight with not much depth to be able to play with CPA,” Gossett said. “So I think at the end we kind of got a little tired and gave up some goals that if we were fresher we may not have given up.

“We did what we could and the girls went out and did what the coaches asked them to do. That’s all you can ask of your players is to play hard and try to do what you ask them to do and they did that tonight.”

In the first half, Montgomery Central was a little unlucky with the first Christ Presbyterian Academy goal, with Anna Avinger just getting enough of a foot on the ball off a corner kick by Wegner to punch it into the net for a 1-0 lead 14 minutes into the match.

The second Lions goal came in the 33rd minute, when Ball was left unchecked and she was able to fire a volley in from 21 yards out.

Overall, CPA had 23 total shots, with 15 come on goal, while the Lady Indians weren’t able to get a shot off versus the Christ Presbyterian Academy defense.

Montgomery Central’s keeper Allison Schmittou finished with eight saves on the night.

“The loss tonight really doesn’t take away anything that the girls accomplished this season,” Gossett said. “Everyone wants to extend the season, to go one more, then one more.

“But this group of seniors and juniors have done a wonderful job and a 15-3 season is nothing to look back on and think we could have done better.”
