APSU Lady Govs Golf Team Leads UAB Beach Blast

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUGulf Shores, AL – Obliterating the program’s single-round record, Austin Peay State University women’s golf team sits in first place after the first day of the UAB Beach Blast, being played on the Lakes to Marsh Course at the Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club.

The Lady Govs, led by senior Tala Mumford’s 2-under 70, shot a 295 opening round. That is five strokes better than the previous best of 300, first set October 30th, 2006, at the Troy Invitational and matched, October 10th, 2011 in the F&M APSU Intercollegiate.

Tulsa is two shots back (297), followed by Belmont (298) and Louisiana Monroe (299) in the 12-team field.

“We played smart golf and executed our shots,” APSU coach Sara Robson said. “I know I have said this before but it was a case of hitting fairways and greens.

Tala Mumford“Of the four counting scores, we had just one hole where we had a double. Three of the four counters had no worse than a bogey.”

Munford, in fact, sits in first place after the opening round, two shots ahead of second place. Sophomore Jessica Cathey, who turned at 2-under, sits in a fourth-place tie after firing a 1-over 73.

“Tala was 2-under on the front side and was 1-under going to the final hole,” Robson said. “She hit the pin with her second shot and the ball came out. She almost had eagle.

Jessica Cathey“Tala just played smart golf today, executed her shots and it paid off in good results.”

Senior Rachel Deaton fired a 5-over 75 while freshman Amber Bosworth came in at 77. Another freshman, Morgan Gardner, rebounded from a tough front nine to finish at 81.

“The girls were really excited breaking the record,” Robson said. “I knew they were playing well on the front nine and I thought they had a chance to have a good round if they started thinking about the fact they were playing well.

“I am happy for them but tomorrow is another day. They have to go out and play the course like they did today—play smart and execute their shots. They can’t control what other teams are doing—we had some teams really playing good golf out there.”

A week after playing watching her team play their fall’s worse tournament at Middle Tennessee, Robson hopes the Lady Govs will take the same mindset Tuesday to Peninsula they did during the opening round.

“We talked about this being the last fall tourney and finishing on positive note,” Robson said. “We talked about being relaxed and having fun, having an enjoyable day on the golf course.”
