APSU Lady Govs Volleyball to host MTSU Tuesday night to close out home schedule

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team will close out the home portion of its 2013 schedule when it hosts Middle Tennessee in a 7:00pm, Tuesday non-conference tilt at the Dunn Center.

In addition to wrapping up its home slate, Austin Peay (10-18) also will be closing the book on a five-match homestand. The Lady Govs have struggled during the homestand, posting just a 1-3 record, but are 5-3 at home overall this season.

Senior Lauren Henderson, who will be playing her final home match Tuesday, has shined during the homestand with 43 kills (3.31 per set) and a team-leading 22 blocks (1.69 per set). Junior Jada Stotts has led the team with 45 kills (3.46 per set) and is second on the team with 11 blocks (0.85 per set) during the four matches.

“Our passing hasn’t been at its best during the homestand,” said Lady Govs head coach Taylor Mott. “When we don’t pass the ball well our offense tends to get one-dimensional and that has certainly been the case the past two weeks. The Tennessee State match showed what can happen when we get the job done off the opponent’s serve. When we find that rhythm, we are a dangerous team.”

Scouting the Opposition

Middle Tennessee (14-10) will make the trek north on Interstate 24 after a five-set loss at East Carolina, Sunday. It is the Blue Raiders third loss in its last four outings and leveled their record at 4-4 away from Murfreesboro.

Sophomore Tyler Richardson has been MTSU’s top threat, leading Conference USA with a .430 attack percentage that ranks 12th nationally. She also leads C-USA in blocking, averaging 1.24 blocks per set, which ranks just outside the nation’s top 50.

Last Meeting and Series History

Tuesday’s affair will be the second meeting between the two Tennessee squads. Middle Tennessee won a five-set match, Sept. 6th, at the Blue Raider Invitational. Playing without Stotts, the Lady Govs saw senior Calyn Hull post 19 kills while Henderson chipped in 12 kills. Jale Hervey led the Blue Raiders with 15 kills while Chelsea Ross added 14 kills.

Middle Tennessee leads the all-time series, 37-18, with five wins in the last seven meetings. Austin Peay holds a 17-8 advantage in matches played in Clarksville, winning last season’s affair in the Dunn Center.
