Austin Peay State University hosts 19th Annual Bread and Words reading on November 26th

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Every November, on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, the Austin Peay State University Department of Languages and Literature hosts a benefit reading that not only celebrates the written word, but also raises public awareness of hunger in the local community.

This year, the tradition continues with the 19th Annual Bread and Words reading on November 26th in the APSU Morgan University Center Ballroom.

The evening begins with a simple meal of soup and bread at 6:00pm, followed by a 7:00pm reading of poetry and fiction by local writers. A donation of $5.00 is requested at the door. The money will go to one of the agencies in Clarksville that provide food for individuals in need.

“We always enjoy sponsoring this event, and I hope many of you will want to be part of it again this year,” Barry Kitterman, APSU professor of creative writing, said. “Last year, we were able to make a substantial donation to the Salvation Army. But of course, if someone would like to come be with us at the dinner and reading, we don’t want money to be an obstacle. We will accept any donations, big and small.”

Readers for this year’s event include Andrea Spofford, APSU’s newest creative writing faculty member and an award-winning poet, along with local writers Will Woosley, Olivia Ware, Carolynn Peaytt and Josh Alexander.

Members and friends of the APSU Department of Languages and Literature interested in preparing pots of soup and loaves of bread may drop off those items shortly before 6:00pm on the evening of the benefit.

For more information about the benefit, contact Kitterman by email at kittermanb@apsu.edu.
