Tennessee Titans lose to Jacksonville Jaguars 29-27 at LP Field

Tennessee TitansNashville, TN – The Jacksonville Jaguars came to LP Field looking for their first win of the season and they got it beating the Tennessee Titans Sunday 29-27. It was a bad omen for the Titans when Chris Johnson fumbled the ball on the first play of the game. Jaguars linebacker Paul Posluszny recovered the ball at the Tennessee 19.

Jacksonville would then run Maurice Jones-Drew three times in a row. On his third carry, Jones-Drew ran off left guard for 6 yards and the score. The Jaguars never looked back.

“We just didn’t play very well. That goes without saying, probably, but I need to say it. You can’t fumble on the first snap of the game when you have a run,” stated Titans head coach Mike Munchak. “We did some things you can’t do against any team, let alone against a team that we knew was struggling.”

The Tennessee offense could not get anything going in the first quarter. The next three possessions ended with punts, two of which were three and outs.

On the next drive, Jack Locker attempts to get the ball to Nate Washington, but it is intercepted by Dwayne Gratz who runs it back 17 yards to Tennessee 45. The Jaguars moved the ball down to the Tennessee 25 where Josh Scobee kicked a 44 yard field goal putting Jacksonville up 13-0.

Titan’s quarterback left the field at 6:22 in the second quarter due to a foot injury. Ryan Fitzpatrick took his place under center making his fourth appearance of 2013. Fitzpatrick went right to work taking the Titans down the field on his first drive of the game. Fitzpatrick hits Taylor Thompson for a 9 yard touchdown pass with :46 seconds remaining in the second quarter. The half ended with the score 13-7 in favor of the Jags.

The second half was much of the same for the Titans. Every time they got something going, there was a penalty, a fumble, or something to set them back. At 7:44 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Titans are down by 7 when Chance Warmack is flagged for holding against former Titan Sen’Derrick Marks in the end zone which results in a safety giving the Jaguars a 22-13 advantage.

The Titans were able to rally late when Fitzpatrick connected with tight end Delanie Walker for a 14 yard touchdown pass with 40 seconds remaining. Tennessee tried an onside kick, but failed to recover the ball ending the game.

Ryan Fitzpatrick was 22 of 33 for 264 yards and a touchdown for the Titans. He also ran 3 times for 14 yards and a touchdown.  Chris Johnson had 30 yards on 12 attempts.

Kendall Wright led all receivers with 7 receptions for 78 yards. Delanie Walker brought in 4 balls for 62 yards and a score. Walker tied his career high for receptions in a season (29) and set a career high with his fifth TD catch of the year. Taylor Thompson got his first reception of the year and the first touchdown of his career.

The Titans turned the ball over a season high four times.

Jacksonville’s Chad Henne was 14 of 23 for 180 yards and two interceptions. Maurice Jones-Drew ran for 41 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. Cecil Shorts had 2 catches for 42 yards.

Tennessee also got banged up during the game. Quarterback Jack Locker went out with a foot injury. He is doubtful for Thursday night’s game. Receiver Damian Williams suffered a leg injury on a punt return. Center Brian Schwenke hurt his right ankle in the first half.

The Titans (4-5) have a short week to get ready as they host the Indianapolis Colts (6-3) on Thursday night. Kickoff is at 7:25pm CT.
