APSU Governors Basketball bolster backcourt with signing of high-scoring St. Louis prep star

Austin Peay State University Governors Sports - APSUClarksvillle, TN – Guard Josh Robinson, who was the second-leading scorer in the St. Louis Metro area in the 2012-13 season, has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Austin Peay State University.

The 6-3, 180-pound Robinson averaged 25.4 ppg as a junior for St. Mary’s High School, shooting 49 percent from the floor (234 of 477) and 33 percent (49 of 150) from three-point range.

He also got to the free throw line 185 times (average of 7.1 per game), connecting on 78 percent of those free tosses. In fact, he went from being a 64.5 percent free-throw shooter as a sophomore to nearly 80 percent a year later.

But Robinson proved more than just a scorer, also being the team’s second-leading rebounder (6.6 rpg) while also doling out 2.1 assists and collecting 1.0 steals per games.

“I really am excited we have been able to sign Josh,” APSU head coach Dave Loos said. “He has a big scorer and the scholarship he will be replacing is Travis Betran, who obviously has put up good numbers. We obviously we were in the market who could score the ball and Josh is that sort of player.

“He has good size. He is a good handler. He has a knack of being able to shoot the ball in traffic…from spots and on off the dribble. He is especially good from midrange. He is a guy who can create and finish.”

Robinson was named Class 4A second-team Missouri All-State last spring. In addition, he was chosen Archdiocesan Athletics Association (AAA), Large Division Offensive Player of the Year as well as being selected all-conference. .

“I don’t think Josh is a guy who is afraid to take big shots—and make them,” Loos said. “He really is good on the offensive end. He will have the normal adjustments to make to play Division I basketball.

“But one of the other things I really like about him is he is a worker. I think he has really good work habits. Hard work is not going to be a surprise to him. He knows that is what it takes and will understand what he will need to do make the adjustment to this level.”

As a sophomore playing for Ed Perniciaro, Robinson averaged 16.5 ppg , shooting 44 percent from the floor that included 39 percent (49 of 125) from three-point range. He averaged 1.4 steals and 1.2 assists in 2011-12 as well.

He played his AAU basketball last summer for Team Ramey and is following in the footsteps of other St. Louis area products (Will Triggs, Cory Arentsen, Joe Harms, Anthony Campbell and Colby Pierce), who have played for the Governors.
