Morehead, KY – Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team played a nip-and-tuck affair with Ohio Valley Conference regular-season champion Morehead State, but fell in four sets (23-25, 22-25, 25-22, 22-25) in the regular season finale for both teams, Saturday night at Wetherby Gymnasium.
The Lady Govs will be seeded fifth in next week’s OVC Volleyball Championship and will face fourth-seed Southeast Missouri in a 4:30pm, Thursday contest in Morehead, KY.
The Lady Govs nearly opened Saturday’s match with a first-set victory, using a 12-2 run to build a 21-14 lead.
Morehead State answered back with eight of the next nine points to tie the set at 22-22, before giving APSU a one-point lead courtesy a service error. The Eagles shook off the miscue and scored the final three points to win the set 25-23.
Morehead State (24-7, 15-1 OVC) won the second set in wire-to-wire fashion, but not without some late drama. Austin Peay used a 5-2 run to tie the set at 22-22 and force a Morehead State timeout. The timeout staggered the Lady Govs who committed three straight attacking errors to hand the set to the Eagles, 25-22.
After the break, Austin Peay opened the third set with all the momentum, building a 7-3 lead and then a 14-8 advantage. Morehead State countered with 14 of the next 22 points to tie the set at 22-22. In a reversal of the second set, it was the Eagles who slipped late, committing three straight attack errors to give the set to APSU, 25-22.
The fourth set was all about rallies with each team piecing together multi-point runs throughout the set. Morehead State scored three straight points late in the set to take a 20-17 advantage and force an Austin Peay timeout. That stoppage slowed the Eagles, but the Lady Govs could not take advantage as MSU closed the set by merely trading points the rest of the way for the 25-22 victory.
“We played well at times but just not enough,” said Lady Govs head coach Taylor Mott. “Aubrey and Lauren had good nights for us. This is a match we can build off of going into the tournament.”
Sophomore Aubrey Marsellis, playing a combo right-side/setter position, led the Lady Govs with 14 kills, 16 assists, three service aces and three blocks. Senior Lauren Henderson continued a long four-week run of outstanding play with a 10-kill, four-block performance. Sophomore Samantha Strother added a seven-kill outing.
Morehead State put forth a balanced offensive attack with Aryn Bohannon’s 13-kill outing one of four double-digit kill performances.
