APSU Lady Govs Basketball host Evansville Purple Aces Saturday

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay women’s basketball team hits the midway point of its five-game homestand when it hosts Evansville in a 7:00pm, Saturday contest at the Dunn Center.

In their last outing, the Lady Govs defeated Trevecca by a 98-77 score line and won at the Dunn Center for the first time since December 29th, 2011.

Sophomore guard Tiasha Gray recorded the first known triple-double in program history, finishing with 13 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists in the contest. In addition, APSU saw freshmen April Rivers and Tearra Banks lead the squad with 17 points each off the bench.

With the win, the Lady Govs improved to 1-1 during the homestand and 2-2 overall.

Head coach Carrie Daniels is in her eighth season with a young squad dominated by sophomores and freshmen. The Lady Govs starting lineup has been composed of a senior, junior and three sophomores in the season’s first four games with four freshman seeing significant action off the bench.

APSU Lady Govs Ledger

Tearra BanksFreshman Tearra Banks was named the OVC’s Freshman of the Week after averaging 13 points and six rebounds in APSU’s previous three games. Austin Peay has opened the 2013-14 season by scoring 69 or more points in each of its first four games, the four-game streak reaching 69 points its first since the end of the 2010-11 season.

The Lady Govs current five-game homestand will be its longest  since the 2005-06 season when it had a six-game homestand. Austin Peay is a young squad in 2013-14 with five sophomore and five freshman dominating the 13-woman roster. The Lady Govs’ seven returnees accounted for only 808 of team’s 1700 points scored (47.5 percent).

Austin Peay’s 2013-14 schedule features 11 games against nine teams that reached the 2012 postseason, including national runner-up Louisville.

Evansville Purple Aces Points

Evansville brings a 2-3 mark into Saturday’s affair, including a 1-1 mark against OVC opposition. The Purple Aces hosted Eastern Illinois and Murray State to begin the 2013-14 campaign, defeating the Panthers (81-46) before falling to the Racers (50-62).

Saturday’s game is Evansville’s first of two road games against the OVC, following Saturday’s contest it will travel to UT Martin for a Monday outing.

Freshman guard Sara Dickey leads UE in scoring (17.2 ppg), including a 22-point outing against Ball State, Wednesday. Junior forward Mallory Ladd is averaging a double-double – 10.8 points and 11.0 rebounds per game – with three in her five outings this season.

An Austin Peay Win Would

  • Make it 2-1 during the current five-game homestand.
  • Give it back-to-back home wins for the first time since last season (St. Catherine, December 9th and Lipscomb, December
    21st).
  • Move it above .500 for the first time since starting the 2011-12 season with consecutive wins.
  • Make it 8-0 at home against Evansville all-time.
  • Improve Daniels’ record to 82-140 overall.
  • Make the Lady Govs 435-612 overall since 1976-77.

An Austin Peay Loss Would

  • Be its first loss to Evansville in the Dunn Center, for a 7-1 mark all-time.
  • Be its second straight loss overall to the Purple Aces.
  • Make it 1-2 during the current five-game homestand.
  • Drop Daniels’ record to 81-141 overall.
  • Make the Lady Govs 434-613 overall since 1976-77.

Unpack Your Bags

After opening the season with consecutive road games, the Lady Govs will have an opportunity to unpack their bags as they play through a five-game homestand that began Friday, November 15th. It will be Austin Peay’s longest homestand since a six-game stretch during the 2005-06 season.

This season’s home stretch will consume 19 days on the schedule, ending with a December 4th morning contest against Middle Tennessee.

Gray Notches Program’s First Triple-Double

Tiasha GraySophomore guard Tiasha Gray finished the Trevecca contest, November 18th, with the first known triple-double in program history – a 13-point, 11-rebound, 12-assist performance.

The rebounding and assist totals were career highs for the Clarksville product.

Scintillating Scoring Pace

Austin Peay has begun the 2013-14 season with 70 or more points in three of its first four outings, including a 98-point effort against Trevecca that was the largest point total during the Daniels era.

The Lady Govs 78.2 points per game after four outings would be a program record, topping the 77.1 average set by the 1985-86 team, that only posted a 14-12 overall mark.

Spreading The Wealth

Nicole OlszewskiAustin Peay saw five players reach double-digit scoring territory in the win against Trevecca, November 18th, continuing the season-opening trend of increasing involvement on the offense end.

The Lady Govs had three players score 10 or more points in the season’s first two games, followed by four players reaching the milestone against Arkansas State, just prior to Tuesday’s quintet.

Indefensible Defense?

While the offense has started out at its impressive pace, the Lady Govs defense has allowed an equally shocking 75.8 points per game. For the sake of comparison, APSU’s defense allowed opponents to score 70.1 points per game last season.

Rare Rookie Double-Double

Freshman center Tearra Banks became the first freshman since the 2007-08 season to record a double-double, posting a 14-point, 11-rebound effort against Arkansas State, November 15th.

Ashley Herring had the Lady Govs last rookie double-double, against Southern Illinois on November 28th, 2007.
