Rossview High School Hawks Win District Shootout at Home Against NorthWest Vikings 61-55

Rossview High School HawksClarksville, TN – Key baskets at the end of the game by Donterius Peacher helped the Rossview Hawks earn their first District 10-AAA win of the season at home Tuesday night against the Northwest Vikings 61-55.

After three periods, the Hawks had established a solid, seven-point lead. However miscues and sloppy play against the Vikings full court press allowed the Vikings to go on a run and cut the lead to three points with 3 minutes left in the game.

Peacher scored 8 of his total 23 points in the last 3 minutes, including two free throws with 13 seconds left in the game to help the Hawks secure the win.

“I think we played hard. There’s no question we played hard, I just don’t think that sometimes our basketball IQ is not that high,” Hawks head coach Johnny Jackson said. “We had some silly turnovers, way too many turnovers against their press. I thought overall though our guys made shots when they needed to. I thought our effort was there. We just got to understand how to slow down a little bit.”

With 1:10 remaining in the game, Vikings guard Elijah McCoin made a steal and passed the ball ahead to his teammate Tramon Moore on the fast break. Moore finished with a two-handed dunk that brought the Vikings, who had been trailing since the end of the first period, within three points of the Hawks again, 55-52.

Before the steal, Peacher had scored 4 straight points for the Hawks to maintain their lead. After the dunk, he answered with 2 more in the paint off an inbound pass from his teammate, to increase the lead back to five with less than a minute remaining.

The Vikings started fouling hoping to get 2-for-1 opportunities from Hawks missed free throws, but the Hawks shot 4-of-5 from the line down the stretch and sealed the victory.

Peacher led the Hawks with 23 points, 15 in the second half. JaVon Vaughn made four 3-pointers on his way to 18 points. Julian Thompson-Clay scored a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Moore put on an aerial assault above the rim, leading all scorers with 32 points. He was one of five Vikings to score in the game.

The Hawks made 10 of 17 total from the free throw line. The Vikings shot only 4 of 17 from the stripe.

After the hard fought district win, Jackson told his team they still need to improve.

“I told them they’re 1-0 in the district. It’s better to be 1-0 than 0-1,” Jackson said. “We’ve got to constantly come to practice ready to learn. We have just got to get better everyday. That’s just not coach talk, that is the reality of it. We have a long way to go. We will get better.”
