Austin Peay State University Governors Sports - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University Governors Basketball is coming off a heartbreaking 58-56 road defeat at Vanderbilt. The loss dropped APSU to 5-6 on the season.

Center Chris Horton, the OVC Player of the Week for last week’s performance against Liberty, continued his strong play against Vanderbilt, scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. It was his second straight double-double and sixth overall this season.

This is the 71st meeting between Austin Peay and Lipscomb, with APSU holding a 40-30 edge. This is fifth time the two teams have met since resuming the series in 2010-11. The Govs are seeking their first win since series’ resumption.

This is Lipscomb’s seventh game this season at Ohio Valley Conference foes.  The Bison are 3-3 against the OVC this season, including a pair of losses to Belmont.

Lipscomb comes in at 4-6 overall under first-year coach Casey Alexander.

When Austin Peay plays Lipscomb, Thursday, it will be the first game as Governors for Clarksville natives Damarius Smith and Zavion Williams against their previous university. Smith, a Kenwood High School graduate, redshirted in  2010-11 at Lipscomb and played the 2011-12 season.

He played last season at Vincennes Junior College before transferring to APSU. Williams, a West Creek High School grad, played the 2011-12 season at Lipscomb before transferring last season to APSU and sitting out according to NCAA rules.

It also will be homecoming for Clarksville natives Malcolm and Martin Smith, juniors on the Lipscomb team.

The Series
This is the 71st meeting between Austin Peay, a member of the Ohio Valley Conference, and Lipscomb, an Atlantic Sun Conference member. The Governors lead the series trail the series 40-30. Since the series resumed in 2010-11, the Governors have lost all four meetings.

What A Win Would Mean
It would make the Governors 6-6…it would be APSU’s second straight home win…it would be APSU’s second December win, improving it to 2-3…it would snap a four-game losing streak in the series…it would improve the Govs to 41-30 all-time in the series…it would give head coach Dave Loos a 1-0 record against new Lipscomb coach Casey Alexander…it would improve APSU to 74-70 against current Atlantic Sun members.

What A Loos Would Mean

The Govs would drop to two games below the .500 mark at 5-7…it would be APSU’s second home loss this season…APSU would drop to 1-4 in December…it would drop APSU to 0-2 against Atlantic Sun members this season…it would drop Dave Loos to 7-12 all-time against Lipscomb…Loos would drop to 458-393 overall and 376-340 as the Governors head coach.

Double Double

Chris HortonSophomore center Chris Horton put together his season’s sixth double-double with 16 points, going 8-of-11 from the floor, and 10 rebounds against Vanderbilt. It backed up his OVC Player of the Week effort of 21 points, and 11 rebounds against Liberty.

Horton also blocked four shots. It was Horton’s first career OVC Player of the Week honor after earning OVC Freshman of the Week nine times a year ago.

On Fire

With his 8-of-11 shooting performance against Vanderbilt, Chris Horton is 16 of 21 (76 percent) from the floor over the last two games. The 6-8, 205-pound Decatur, GA, native is shooting 60 percent from the floor on the season.

Shooting Woes

Take away Chris Horton’s 8-of-11 shooting performance against Vanderbilt, the rest of the Govs were just 15 of 56 (26.8 percent) from the floor. As a result, for the second time in three games and third time for the season the Govs shot below 40 percent from the floor with their 23-of-67 effort (34.3 percent).

Board Work

With his 10 rebounds against Vanderbilt, Chris Horton has led or been the Govs’ co-leader in rebounds in all 11 games this season. He is averaging 10.1 rpg for the season.
