Chris Horton named APSU Athlete of the Week

APSU - Austin Peay State University SportsClarksville, TN – For the third time in the last four weeks, sophomore center Chris Horton, of Austin Peay State University men’s basketball team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

Horton racked up his season’s fifth double-double in the Govs 77-71 win against Liberty, Saturday, at the Dunn Center. The Decatur, GA, native scored 21 points – his season’s second 20-point outburst – and pulled down 11 rebounds along with four blocked shots in the victory.

With Liberty packing the lane to try and limit Horton’s effectiveness around the basket, the big man showed good touch from distance, with five of his eight made baskets coming on jump shots. His 80 percent (8-for-10) shooting effort was a season-best as well.

Monday, Horton was named adidas® Ohio Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. It’s his first career player of the week honor after earning nine OVC Freshman of the Week honors last season.

The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Tuesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:

  • Junior guard Damarius Smith, of the men’s basketball team, tallied a career-high 12 assists in the win over Liberty, the most by a Governor since Derek Wright had a dozen against UT Martin, January 3rd, 2008. Smith now has two double-digit assist games this season, the first Gov with more than one double-digit assist contest in the same season since Wright’s 2007-08 campaign.
  • Junior guard Kristen Stainback, of the women’s basketball team, led the Lady Govs with 14 points in Saturday’s loss at seventh-ranked Louisville.
